4. I rolled the vaccination dice once too often

I have never had the flu and never had a flu shot. So there I was in December in the hospital having kidney stones surgically removed. I was doing quite well up until this point. I was discharged but never made it home. I got very sick in the car on the way so my daughter just turned the car around and I was re-admitted. Evidence suggests that I caught the H1N1 virus in the hospital. To say I was sicker than a dog is a gross understatement. I had pneumonia and a chest full of fluid and then, the cherry on top of the cake, I had congestive heart failure. I am now fully recovered, no evidence of continuing CHF. I DID get the flu shot before I left the hospital and I have it on my calendar to get another one in October. The experience certainly made a believer out of me.

I got the so-called "Hong Kong" flu many years ago, when I was in college. It was just awful - I couldn't decide whether to be afraid I was going to die, or afraid I wasn't. As soon as flu shots became available I started getting them because I never want to be that sick again.

Lots of anti-vacciners are on the left, and claim that vaccines are all some sort of Big Pharma money grab. Most, if not all of them are too young to remember the polio epidemics of the post-WW 2 era, before Jonas Salk came up with a vaccine. I am, too. But, I am not so young that I didn't get to see all of the photos of kids in iron lungs or in leg braces.
