Alternate names for the ladybug were cockchafer and lady cow.

The Royal Navy has had four different ships named HMS Cockchafer in service. The most recent one served in both world wars.

4. When you are not using exact scientific taxonomy

the labels become pretty malleable. We call a lot of beetles ladybugs, but they aren't true ladybugs. I imagine it was the same in medieval through Victorian times in England. The point is, cockchafer is an hilarious name.
