These were two very distinct people. One quite famous for whatever reason, and the other not.

You can make comparisons all day long, but why?

It's very unfortunate that these artists are both dead.

The rest is just noise.

all else was not equal. hence the difference in coverage and regard.

if you live in america and you basically say white men are being ignored and black women are being glorified, and you don't see the problem in this, you need a civil rights history lesson.

How many black artists were ignored & people who stole their music are glorified? look at the history of blues.

Look at the history of music and see how many black artists were deprived their recognition/value by the music industry.

as well as a professional rock musician for the past 25 years, I certainly don't need a lecture about the injustices perpetrated on black musicians throughout the years. The fact that you see racism in that graphic speaks more about you than it does me. Tell you what... next time some talentless, white hack like Britney or Madonna shuffles off the old mortal coil, if the ensuing grief-gasm is anything like it has been for Whitney, I'd be happy to contrast it with the lack of press given to the passing of true artists like Phil Lynott, Harold Melvin, or Claydes Charles Smith.

Whitney Houston had a terrific voice and lots of fans, there's nothing wrong in that.

I if you want to pick on someone who really has no talent or gift, pick a Kardashian or this modern pheonomenon here:

OK.. "typically" may not have been the most apropos term.. however, I would bet that more people here can name the women pictured above, than the men. Even though those men collectively have sold more albums, written/published more music and play more instruments than the women.

Many lesser artists of his day made fortunes. Today his paintings are the most expensive in existence. Commercial success and artistic brilliance don't often coincide.

Now go listen to Joe Pass.

Or Howard Roberts.....

And get back to me about dope fiends and prolific recording careers.

Incidentally - Roberts might have been the most recorded guitarist in the history of the instrument.

From the beach boys to the soundtrack of 'Shaft".

Kicked dope 20 years before he died.

And Joe Pass...well......he simply redefined finger style jazz guitar after not playing for 8 years over the dope.

Not a mention in the press....Not even in Rolling Stone as far as Pass was concerned.

As usual, YMMV
