I had a cat that was in the habit of sleeping on my chest with her nose almost touching my lips. There were times I would wake up to her sniffing my breath. Other times I would wake up as I started having trouble breathing. What was happening was my cat's added weight to my chest would make it easier to exhale, but harder to inhale. With each successive breath, I was loosing volume!

If people back in the day, came in and found a sleeping cat on a child that was struggling to breath or even dead, with their lips resting next to the milk breathed babies mouth... I wonder if this was the seed of for that old wive's tale?
