He nearly got sent home from the school trip he was on (which would've been an 8-hour drive, each direction, for us to pick him up.) Dh is still cheering about that one, as it's the first time the kid has actually gotten in serious trouble. But the teacher brushed it off, noting that he was a good kid.

Both kids come home from school/sports and sit down at the dining room table and do their homework. We aren't home to nag them, so we really don't know what happened there. We don't claim responsibility for their responsibleness. Both are straight-A students. One takes differential equations at a local college (he's the sophomore in high school). The other takes pre-calculus (he's the freshman in high school).

So far, so good. Things can change - we know that - but their course in life is good so far. We got lucky, is all.

She worked as graphic designer for a Catholic college in Miami. She got free tuition as an employee. She earned her bachelor's degree. Then she want on to become a teacher. She then earned her Master's degree. She is still a teacher, but is earning a lot more money. She did all this within 8 years. She also had a husband and two adopted daughters at the time. She is divorced now and the girls have moved on to marriage.

Both my sons have turned out great!

One is 27 and works for a software firm that develops apps for smart phones.
He is self-taught. Didn't go to college. He owns two cars--loves to
drive autocross--and his own townhouse. Without his help, his dad
and I would be at a total loss dealing with home computer issues!

The youngest son--who will be 24 next month-- is legally blind from a juvenile genetic form of macular degeneration.
He sees with his peripheral vision. In 2012 he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with
a double major in German and Comparative Lit. from UNC-Chapel Hill. He is currently
in Berlin on a Fulbright Scholarship and has been accepted (with a darn good financial aid package) to the Yale School
of Drama to begin a three year MFA program in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism next fall.

Yes, I am a proud mama!

Oldest is a straight arrow. Driven, goal oriented, unique and interesting. A medieval archaeologist whose tremendously passionate about her field and smart as a whip.

Youngest is taking a more difficult path. Wild, troubled, incredibly intelligent, fearless. She wants to "change the world". At 17 years old, its entirely possible with this one. She graduates in June and is on track be her school's valedictorian. Look out world.

Our two girls were born in Germany, grew up speaking German as their native language, went to the States at first on academic exchange programs. Due to their parents' two nationalities, they are both German and American citizens.

One is now an assistant buyer for an important chain of stores based in Manhattan, makes very little money (for New York City), but loves living there, and pays her own way in the brutal fashion field, has tons of friends and has a good time.

The other dared to go to school halfway around the planet, exactly twelve time zones from us, then completed college and law school in the States, doing very un-traditional things during her summers. While other law students were clerking for prestige firms, she joined the UN War Crimes Tribunal in Sierra Leone. When she graduated, jobs were not to be had in the States, so she applied for a position with the German arm of a British law firm and has been so successful in international law these past three years that headhunters are practically camped out on her door.

Our two bilingual, dual national beauties last New Year's Day:

Oldest daughter was kicked up to the vice-president position in an insurance company about a year ago. Married, no kids but some huge dreams.
Youngest is married and right now a stay at home mom for one boy. When she worked she was one terrific biology/ physics teacher with some recognition. Her husband is a true up and comer in his company (fortune 500 company).

But the real surprise for us has been a young man we have been mentoring and tutoring since he was 8. He is completing his junior year in high school as a page in the Iowa state senate. This is a hard position to get. He bowled them over in his interview. I know our local politicians and they say he is one of the nicest young men they have ever met.
When we started working with him, I would have been happy if he graduated high school. When we started with him he could barely read.

His mom and dad were immigrants from Mexico. He literally came across the border in mom's uterus just before he was born.

He got his first A in sixth grade. His grin was so big he could barely fit through the door. 7th and 8th grades he continued success. In 9th grade, he was so busy that we suspended tutoring to an as needed basis. That year he joined the speech club and won a state competition. He joined chorus and has been chosen as an all stater. This summer he goes to Europe to tour with an all state group. His grades are in the 3.5 range and he is planning on taking some college courses next year. He had the 2nd lead in the school play and is part of a hilarious Improv group at school.

His mom and dad are stunned by his achievements. We are stunned. Randy himself is quite eager to take on more. I so hope I get a few more years to see where he goes.

Thank you for letting me brag a bit, cause I am really proud of this group.

oooo - one more - another boy we are working with - his reading level has gone up six years in the last year - he'll be in 7th next year and his confidence is soaring! His dad was so worried and now he is so proud. Another immigrant family.

20. My daughter will be a college senior after one year of college
Thu Mar 27, 2014, 09:54 PM

This is remarkable because this is also her freshman year of college. When she was in high school she participated in the College In the School program, the PSEO program, and she took every advanced placement class she could and scored 5's on all of them. She entered the university this year with two remaining general education classes.

She is in the honors program at her university and was officially a junior at the end of last semester. By the end of May she will have accumulated 91 of the 120 credits she needs to graduate and be a senior. She is pursuing a double major and will graduate in 3 more semesters. Currently she has a 3.9 GPA.

She has also been awarded two research scholarships. And she has a campus job that she got on her own and what a job it is. She is part of the administrative support for the president of her university. Between her research and her office job, she is working 40 hours a week and handling more than a full course load. I am so proud of her and I can't tell anyone I know because all that sounds like utter impossible bullshit.

Our older daughter has a PhD in astrophysics, and after having worked in the field for ten years, decided that the only way to live is to do what she REALLY wants, and that is to paint. So she is now establishing herself as a fine painter. The market is tough, and with today's economy....well, it has not been easy. Still, she is making a name for herself. She has a terrific boyfriend, and they have bought a home together. They are turning into urban farmers, with all sorts of crops coming along. She is also the proud aunt to her sister's three children. She has dedicated herself to helping them grow up and has helped them have experiences that they would not otherwise be getting.

Our younger daughter also makes us proud and happy! She is married to a terrific young man who is a detective with the local law enforcement agency. She is working full time as a 911 operator and dispatcher; she is also an instructor for her agency. They have three children who are gorgeous, smart and loads of fun.

Both our girls are smart and compassionate people. But they have taken very different paths in their lives. It has been a considerable treat watching them grow up and become the wonderful young women they are. We feel very lucky!

Thanks for this terrific post, my dear steve2470! It's fun reading about other people's children, including yours, and having a chance to talk about our own.

He's almost completed all requirements fr a PhD in theoretical high energy/particle physics at J. Hopkins U. He's in his 5th yr of grad school there. He's worked so hard on his research and has done some great work there while, at the same time, he's gotten a patent and formed a company on the side!

Sounds great, right? But on the downside:
He's a hopeless romantic who desperately wants to meet the right girl but sadly, after ~dozen or so failed relationships, he's depressed and close to giving up. ( He's remained friends with several of his ex g.f.). I think he'd trade a degree or two for the right woman. Too much info?

It took my sisters and I until our 50th decade to realize that Mom always spoke highly of us, but only to OTHER
people. Each of us grew up feeling no matter what, we couldn't earn her approval, not really. One reason it
took that long is because two sisters moved far away right after graduating from school, and our chances to be
together over the years have been rare.

Anyway, I make it a point to tell my children how proud I am of them at least every few months.
It's just something we all need to hear. No matter how old we get.

Since my son is 18, there's admittedly been moments when I've NOT been proud of him. He's a normal teenager, just like I was. Thankfully, there are many moments I have been proud of him, and I do try to tell him when I think of it. Those attaboys and attagirls are priceless for kids, much more so long-term than many other things.

Sometimes I ask my husband how we ended up with such great kids.
Getting used to the fact that they are adults now but still "the kids."

Oldest will be 24 this month. Married with two super great sons, buying a home (2 miles away!) and moving up in the senior living community where she started as a receptionist (now a business office assistant). She had her first son in the middle of her senior year in high school.

My son will be graduating next month with a BA. Then he is off to Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer. Hard to let him go, but wow, what experience! He is supposed to give a speech at the graduation. He was in marching band in high school. Don't know where he got the guts for public performance, not me or his dad. He is very smart (has been smarter than I since he was in grade school).

Youngest daughter is still at home and still borrowing my socks. But she has a job in the dining room where her sister works and she is finishing her first year at the community college where I got my AA over the course of 27 years!

I worry about them, and my grandsons, so much, but really shouldn't because they are starting out their own lives in a good place and I am pretty sure they are happy (that was all I ever wanted them to have...happiness!)

Could not let a chance to brag pass me by!

Daughter number one will be 42 this year. She is the excellent mother of three wonderful boys, 14, 11 and 6 and works as office administrator/paralegal for a law firm in Denver. She is currently working to complete her degree. She is also an incredible rock singer and sounds quite a bit like Ann Wilson. She and her guitar-slinging husband used to have a really good band here in Anchorage and had quite a following around town.

Daughter number two is 36, mother to three wonderful kids, a boy and two girls, almost 5, almost 3 and an 8-month old. She is one of six or seven staff attorneys for the Directors' Guild in Los Angeles and also an accomplished knitter and cook and writes a really fun little blog in her spare time.

My youngest girl is 28 and lives in the other half of our duplex with her boyfriend. She is incredibly smart and is an excellent pianist. She has worked herself up from a teller at our credit union to IT administrator and is my go-to person when I have computer issues. She's very sweet and compassionate, and I'm so happy to have her close by as my husband and I get older. We've given her a really good deal on the rent so she won't want to move. She has told me that she doesn't plan on having kids, which is fine because six grandchildren between three daughters is just about right.

All three are good Democrats and vote.

I love my girls and grandchildren so much. With the chaos around here while they were growing up (abusive ex-husband, father of the youngest), I am thrilled that they all turned out so well. (Ex never abused the kids, just me. )

The elder Daughter is a compassionate and honest Girl, she goes to Quaker Camp and the Quaker ethos has stuck to her like glue. She is an honor student in her Middle School, plays trumpet (like her dear old Dad) and likes to go to Nationals games with me.

The younger Daughter is a constant delight.

My son graduated summa cum laude from Alabama. He is a data analyst for a major insurance company/bank that serves military members while he awaits the start of medical school. His wife is nearing completion of her PhD in theoretical chemistry.

My daughter is a successful real estate agent and a regional director of marketing for a major soft drink maker. Her fiancée travels the world as a troubleshooter for a major energy company.

More important than all of the above, they are loving, caring, empathetic and community - involved people. I couldn't be any more proud.

Thanks for letting me brag!
