Yep. Florida. Trial by combat.
WFTV in Orlando reports that Judge John Murphy hit assistant public defender Andrew Weinstock after the two exchanged words over whether his client could have a speedy trial in the Brevard County courtroom.

(20,176 posts)Brevard is one of the larger non-urban counties in Florida and a popular vacation destination for its beaches and Kennedy Space Center.
Really though, that shit is bananas. I've lived a lot of places and seen the inside of a lot of courts...a have a lot of lawyer friends, a long history as an activist, (yes, being arrested and released) and some unfortunate legal entanglements. (Not mine. My father's a repeat felon; my best friends from middle school, repeat felons; my parents divorce is now taught in UConn law school as an example of an acrimonious divorce/custody/alimony-fight and how they can drag on for decades.)
I've never seen a judge and a public defender resort to mortal combat...I've seen two lawyers punching each other out in a parking garage but nothing like this.

(4,851 posts)The Judge was insane for getting off the bench and telling the lawyer he was going to hit him. the Lawyer was insane for following the judge out of the room to get in a fight. Its just not acceptable behavior for a courtroom and not for judges and attorneys. the lawyer was doing fine right up until he left the room. He should have stood his ground and just said, I am not getting into a fight over this, but my client does not waive his right to a speedy trial.
