What was so great about Waldo Pepper?

I thought he was kind of an asshole.

He sabotaged his rival's plane.

He lied about his war record.

He practically pushed Mary Beth off the wing instead of making a genuine effort to save her.

His psychotic pursuit of fame directly led to others getting killed.

Was it just that he was good looking?

Provided kids with plane rides (or cash equivalent) for schlepping gasoline.

Told entertaining stories about the WWI experiences of flyers who never made it back to tell their stories.

Killed that Kessler guy at the end, thus avenging the deaths of many Americans.
