Can someone tell me why people do it?

Don't need to hear anymore ill effects.

I'm asking because a friend is driving 40 miles to the next town to get pouches (wtf) cause they are sold out here in our town.

Thanks.

little tiny packs of snuff instead of putting an actual pinch of the stuff between your cheek and gum. They were less messy but tasted just as bad.

They absorb it through their lips ,gums.tongue and esophagus.
The problem is that it causes a lot of oral cancers per thousand. The actual chemical addiction lasts 3 days but the behavioral effects can cause extensive relapsing if the craving and triggers aren't identified and dealt with.

fiberglass in each pouch to open the skin (lips, gums, cheeks) so the nicotine can get right into the system.

don't know if it is true, but I would not doubt it as sleazy as tobacco companies are.

I am pretty sure those scumbags would load the packets with horse dung if it polished up their bottom line.
Maybe they do, it tastes like I would imagine horse dung tastes.
Also,I won't kiss a woman who chews.That's right out!!!

you get the nicotine high and you don't have to light up.

but man the taste is foul. Growing up on a farm I had to try the stuff when I was a kid and everyone I knew seemed to use one form or another. Varieties we had around were usually either snuff (Copenhagen, Skoal) or actual chew (Beech Nut, Red Man).

I still remember the taste and smell vividly.

just a general feeling of well being because of a lack of craving.
Nicotine is worse than heroin where addiction is concerned.

in high school. Don't think he's gone back to it, but he does smoke cigarettes. I've never tried chewing tobacco, but I do smoke.

Smoking gives me a relaxed feeling. If I don't have a smoke in like 10 or 12 hours or so, when I do light up again, I get a little dizzy.

Changes in the oral tissues cells have been seen as early as 10mins of placement of smokeless tobacco product in the mouth.

Several reasons, smoking will eventually cause you to suck wind when running. If you are out in the field more than likely ya can't smoke at night because ya can see a lit cigarette from miles away with NVG's. Also ya can't smoke while flying anymore, so guys/gals will chew. Some pilots however will not let the aircrew and passengers chew, but that is rare.

What you're talking about upthread, the pouched snuff, is sort of a middle ground between the two. Loose snuff is stronger than pouched because there isn't really much in a pouch, so you tend to use more.

Even a heavy smoker can make themselves heartily sick with a big chunk of Copenhagen. (strongest kind) We're talking a staggering around unable to function until it wears off drunk. So I'm not sure where the idea that there isn't a high is coming from.

The first time I ever tried the stuff was on top of a steam tower in a No Tobacco mill (Before people cheer: That's a Koch brothers policy to keep the employees paranoid about one another) when I still smoked heavily. A good chunk of Copenhagen later, and I was too fucked up to climb the 200 feet back down the ladders to get off it.

So it's like super cigarettes, only you're not giving the people around you cancer.

in college that was a "professional" tobacco chewer. This guy could sit through an entire 90 minute lecture without spitting. From Monday morning to Friday afternoon, he would go through a case (10 bags) of Mail Pouch. Sometimes he would run out before Friday.

So I asked him the same question as the OP. He told me and this is my advice, just try it. Get some Beech Nut (candy he called it) and give it whirl. Just don't swollow any of the juce, that will kill you.

First try is say 2 minutes. You will not get addicted to it. I used up my pouch over the course of a few weeks and suffered no lasting ill effects at all. I do think it is foul to do in public and I'ts not for me overall.

A good medium to full strength handrolled cigar on the other hand, will leave you weak in the knees.

if you chew up some tobacco and make it into a sort of poultice, it will draw the inflammation right out of a bee wasp or hornet sting. My dad would just break off part of a cigarette and chew it up and put it on our stings. It really works.
