If you're going to watch just one episode of the Strain, watch the one that just aired this Sunday.

"Creatures of the Night." You'll be set in the middle of a growing vampire epidemic as the protagonists get stuck in a convenience store and have to figure out a way out. There are twists, drama, gore, and humor. It will raise the bar in the genre.

I particularly enjoy watching David Bradley, who plays the old man Abraham Setrakian
and was Walder Frey in Game of Thrones
and Argus Filch in Harry Potter...

He also has roles in many of the Simon Pegg movies, like Hot Fuzz, where he has such a thick brogue that he needs a translator.

since following your recommendation and becoming a viewer since the first episode. I guess I'll catch it next week. It's a pretty good series and I rarely get hooked these days by TV serials. The first episode moved pretty fast and the action has slowed down some week-to-week since then, but it's still pretty well made.
