keep using the crib he climbs out of, or go to a toddler bed?

(1,985 posts)Then child-proof the bedroom and put a taller gate in the doorway. This opinion brought to you by the mom of a four year old.
Enjoy the little one.

(32,974 posts)sooner or later a fall from the crib will happen; better 8 inches then 3 feet. Aunt of 7. Also watch to see if the dresser/what ever you have in the bedroom for clothes is used as a jungle gym. I have a nice sized scar on my left forehead from that day, my poor Grandma beat herself up for years over that.

(38,311 posts)We knew it wasn't going to work when our oldest escaped his crib at ten months and thumped onto the wooden floor with nary a cry or yelp, and then got up running.
They ended up sleeping with us.
Any form of containment they saw as a challenge.
My parents had a mess of kids, Catholic style, and they were soon overwhelmed. We were essentially feral children much of the time but we all survived.

(11,360 posts)If you can't get a toddler bed frame right away, just put the mattress on the floor.

(1,819 posts)That was the end of his crib days, too. Much safer to have him sleep closer to the ground.

They always ended up in our bed.
So we bought a bigger bed.
In our high-stress-working-day-and-night-one-parent-always-at-home-lifestyle, our babes slept with us in the big bed.
But honestly I was severely sleep deprived so I don't remember it well. I'd come home from work, my wife would go off to her superhero-graduate-school, and sometimes I'd crash on the floor without making it into bed. Next thing I'd know a little kid would be prying open my eyelids and telling me to wake up for breakfast.
Things are not much better now that our kids our grown and flown the nest. We have a dog who stands on my chest and breathes in my face, nose-to-nose like cats do, whenever she decides it's time for me to get up, especially when my wife is away.
That's okay. I mostly live on dog time these days.

(6,011 posts)This says you can get a conversion kit from some crib manufacturers- since 1-year-olds are still small, that would be large enough sleeping space for a while.

Just make sure kid can't get up and go to the park at 1:00 a.m.

(8,462 posts)They work well until late 2's as long as they fit mechanically on the crib (rectangle not oval). Then you're doing the mattress on the floor deal.

(25,816 posts)Their beds were in a separate but open room to mine. Many was the time I woke up to one of them falling out of bed in their sleep.
Sometimes they didn't even wake up.
