(38,613 posts)Is it an attempt to imitate birds, and thus lure one to its death?

(115,869 posts)Most cats make that quite distinctive teeth chattering sort of noise that seems reserved specifically for when they see birds or squirrels, whether outside or on television. Actually, that noise may be more of an instinct than we realize. Many feline behavior specialists have noted the similarity of that noise to the special neck bite that cats use in the wild designed to kill a bird or small rodent quickly and efficiently, before they have a chance to struggle. Young kittens and cubs in the wild have the opportunity to practice this special bite; house cats may just be showing their excitement at seeing potential prey, or possibly their frustration (with the excitement, too) in seeing potential prey that they cannot get to. Many times, you may notice that your cats tail is getting puffy, or is twitching in a special way that accompanies his special chattering noises.

As I understand it, the tongue rapidly covers/uncovers the organ to facilitate smell.

(21,812 posts)I find it fun, fascinating and relaxing to watch a cat observe things from window sill or standing outside. Subconsciously, I find my breath getting slower, deeper and quieter.

(14,691 posts)would "chatter" when he saw birds outside. Once there was a Mourning Dove and two chicks on the fire escape and Pookie was chattering away. They moved down the railing at first but then when they realized he couldn't get at them, they moved back and stayed right in front of him. Pookie was beside himself. Bad birdies.
