The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI re-watched the pilot episode of "Sports Night" yesterday.
It was interesting to see Casey McCall (played by Peter Krause) lose his interest in sports because of the number of criminal incidents committed by "punks and thugs", who are then allowed to go on and continue to play the game.
It was a timely reminder of the awful things wealthy athletes get away with because punishing them would cost the league money and prestige.
(BTW, Casey's dedication to sports was re-kindled in the final moments of the episode by watching a world running record being broken by a South African distance runner who had previously had his legs broken while being tortured by the apartheid regime. Can we please have a hero who behaves with honor and nobility, and restores our faith in humanity?)

(66,307 posts)Created and written by Aaron Sorkin of The West Wing (the two shows aired simultaneously for a season).
I'm not a big sports fan, but I love the show. I have the entire run (2 seasons) on DVD. The writing is spectacular. The acting is off the charts, and the social outlook is reliably progressive, reflecting Sorkin's breathtakingly eloquent liberalism.
Every time I re-watch an episode, I recognize an another actor or two who went on to appear in TWW, either in a major or supporting role.

(12,132 posts)One of my all time favorite shows. Haven't seen it in a long time - maybe time to re-watch (And I'm a guy who NEVER re-watches most things)(Except cartoons).
I didn't know who Sorkin was then. I didn't know it was a liberal show (I really wasn't into politics that much). All I knew is I loved the characters and they kept saying stuff I agreed with and they made me laugh and cry. Sometimes at the same time.
Yeah, it doesn't take a sports fan to love this show. You don't have to like sports at all (though I do). It's not really about sports - it's about the people who happen to work on a sports show.

(53,339 posts)That was a great show with a great cast, very intelligently written. It was tough losing it, though it's hard to think of a better reason than Sorkin launching The West Wing.
