Leonard Cohen turns 80 on September 22, and will be releasing his thirteenth studio album, Popular Problems to commemorate the date. NPR First Listen has the full stream of “Popular Albums” so you can get situated before throwing Cohen an absentee birthday party next week.

It’s not everyday you get eighty-year-old musical powerhouses releasing their double-digit albums that compete with the best of their past work, but Popular Problems highlights Cohen at his best–the growling heartbreak and sarcastic poetry that has marked him as one of the greatest musicians of the late 20th century are strong forces on this album.

Personally I have it as a tie between Cohen and Tom Waits for the greatest living songwriter.
