Pretty terrifying 36 hours or so.

Yesterday morning, our 14 year old son was hit by a pickup truck on his way to school. We got the call and frantically headed over to the local hospital, where we found him severely drugged out on oxycodone, with a pretty substantial concussion, a fractured ulna and various scrapes and bumps. But, after spending the night with him at St. Peter's hospital, he's home now and appears to be on the mend. Definitely not anything we want to ever have to go through again, though.

So glad it wasn't worse. Is that the St. Peter's hospital in Montana?

I assume the driver stopped.

And yeah, he stopped, so big kudos to him. Though I'm still waiting to hook up with the sheriff to get all the info and stuff. I'm gonna need his insurance info (though the kids are, thankfully, covered under Washington State's version of Medicaid)

Please do some research on concussion and post concussion syndrome. It can take up to a few weeks for symptoms related to it show up, as well as several months for a possible TBI related depression. I don't say any of this to scare you, just for you to be aware of. I am 8 months post concussion and I am still experiencing significant symptoms. The next 2 weeks he should avoid over doing it on the computer, texting, watching movies or TV, doing mentally challenging processes like math. He is young and healthy, but a TBI at his age can cause issues now and even decades in the future.

We were given reams of paperwork by the hospital on concussions/TBI, but you can never have enough information, and in these cases, you can never have enough vigilance.

Amazing how quickly kids can seem to heal. And Mrs. Opie and I are doing better as well. Still get those moments of "holy shit, that could have been WAAAAY bad", but getting all the follow up appointments and whatnot gives us a bit of a sense of control over the randomness of it I think.

Fortunately, he's doing much, much better. Still has a bit of a recovery ahead of him but these kids can seem pretty damned resilient.
