The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHere's a cheery question: What songs/music do you want played at your funeral?
I'm writing an article. It came out of a conversation with some friends over too much wine and too much access to YouTube. I really appreciated the desire to go all Huckleberry Finn and know how people would respond to the last things we want to say via funeral music, and how it can reflect who we are (and it does if we son't care and let someone else handle it or choose nothing at all too).
Me? If you knew my background you'd get this, but I've been doing this since I was a kid, though most of my current choices are somewhat recent. My (partial) list so far:
In My Life (A friend pissed me off royally last year by dying and using it ahead of me. That is SOOOO him. )
As (Stevie Wonder says "always" like nobody else in the world)
Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen's version)
Come On Up to the House (Tom Waits version)
Keep Me in Your Heart for Awhile (Warren Zevon wrote this in anticipation of his own death and I want people to CRY)
Take Me to the Mardi Gras (Because that's what I want it to be like and because NOLA is my heart)
Every Breath You Take (Because...well, why not threaten them a little on the way out)
And of course some New Orleans Jazz Funeral second line processional, but my choices change all the time.
I'm sure it'll change again over time, but this tickles me.
What about all y'all? What do you want your going-out music to be?

(35,015 posts)while we were all sitting in the funeral chapel, after a somber service that left everyone in tears, this version flooded the room.
If you had been there and looked around, you would have seen just about everyone smile. I squeezed my daughter's hand and said "perfect song, Jason is laughing his ass off right now".
Love you Jason.

(41,963 posts)I saw an article not too long ago with an interview with Claire Torry. She did this piece as a studio musician so hadn't gotten royalties, or even known she was used until she heard the album. She went in and they said "sing about dying." It was the second take, and done all the way through. And it might, without words, say it all.

It depends on the mood I'm in. Siegfried's Funeral March is a trifle too bombastic, but I love the piece:

(34,136 posts)Right now I have nothing specified in my directives. But I've told my husband if he wants to do something it's up to his wishes.
If the neighbors continue to piss me off, I may make arrangements for live bands from the Bradfordville Blues Club to come and put on performances for a good 24 hours. If the bands set up at the bottom of the hill, the sound will echo up and down the shallow valley and rock the entire area!
On the other hand, at my BIL's memorial service they played Drift Away and asked everyone to sing along:
A note - the lake in the video looks a lot like the lake where the memorial was held.

(34,136 posts)Every year for the man's birthday. Although they were a quarter of mile or more away, the volume was so loud I could hear my TV inside the house with the windows closed.
Finally, one year when we were hosting the mounted units from downstate for the state memorial to fallen law enforcement officers, the visiting police complained - and THEY called in a noise complaint. After that, I called in every year, especially since the man's birthday coincided with the memorial weekend every year.
While that guy hasn't had those parties at his house for the last few years - he may have died or moved - I still have neighbors who set off illegal fireworks, run VERY loud engines, or operate mowers and leaf blowers constantly.
So I would love to have posthumous revenge by having live bands here!

(38,958 posts)there won't be a funeral for me. Very specific about that, when I reach the expiration date it's body donation or if that doesn't work a quick cremation and we are out of here.

Mariachi is a celebration, and with the exception of this monstrously depressing last year at home, I've made my life a celebration and will continue to do so (tons of travel planned-to three new places-in the next year; and other journeys in a figurative sense).

"The Parting Glass"
Oh all the money that e'er I spent
I spent it in good company
And all the harm that e'er I've done
Alas, it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
Oh all the comrades that e'er I've had
Are sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I've had
Would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
Good night and joy be with you all

(7,699 posts)Before you even call my name
I will be there by your side
When your standing at the rivers edge
I will be the bridge you find
If you said, "Meet me now beyond the stars"
I'd pack my bags and go that far
With the street that only love commands
I give my heart
Keep it with you if you have to go
It will see you safely home
Wrap it 'round you like your favorite coat
When your called out in a storm
If you lose faith in who you are
I'd bring you back, I'd go that far
With the strength that only love commands
I give my heart
When all that's left of me
All the words in this song
I know this love will carry on
With the strength that only love commands
I give my heart

(13,081 posts)I have an acquaintance who's a comedian; he's giving the service (I'm an atheist).
The memorial service will be in the gym of the high school I work at.
Everyone who comes has to pay a buck, so that it can be given as a scholarship to some deserving kid with terrible grades (like me) the next year, and s/he can be guilted into finishing (unlike me for more than decade).
A hole must be drilled into the side of the coffin so I can check out any hot chicks at the funeral (Taiwanese style, to keep it multicultural).
My best work friend must give a eulogy -- and she must do it with her her wife (in order to piss off the conservative parents).
The school marching band should play John Phillip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever," because it's impossible to be sad when that song plays.
"Here Comes the Sun" must be played, because that's the song that I sang to my kid as a lullaby, since I didn't know any other songs. After that, "Two of Us," because that'll make her cry. And when she learns that I made her cry on purpose, she'll realize how funny that is.
As many of my childhood (and I define childhood much as Dubya defined childhood) friends have to spill all of my secrets (again, to mess with the conservative's heads).
Finally, all of my comic books and movies are left to my only child. She is to sell them for drug money, but only after she reads/watches them. Unless she buys the drugs first, and gets confused between reading and watching.
