pretty much all winter here, in little groups on farms and in fields.

Canadian geese.

I'm in Western Mass near the Berkshires.

Never used to see them until March or so.

all winter now, but I think I'm seeing the geese from the Montezuma Reserve moving out. This is a major flyway because Lake Ontario empties into the St. Lawrence just north of here. Birds of prey come through here too, because of a large plateau that allows them to gain some altitude before crossing the river.

who were taking care of our chickens came by one evening to close up the hen house and discovered that about 20 chickens had vanished. No feathers, no blood, no sign of what had happened. The rest were huddling under the lilac bush and had to be shooed into the hen house. We think there must have been a bunch of raptors passing over on their way south.

I've lost one or two over the years, but nothing like this. I'm just crossing my fingers for Spring.

We refer to this as our contribution to wildlife!
