In 1896, a Texas railroad PR agent, William Crush, got two 35 ton train engines, painted one red and one green, set them at opposite ends of a four mile track, then sent them toward each other at 45 miles per hour. As a publicity stunt, it was a success. It attracted 40,000 spectators, but falling debris from the crash killed two people. Event photographer Jarvis “Joe” Deane lost one eye to a flying bolt.
