It has so many different sides to it, about Communist witch hunting of the 50s and so much more..I saw it in the theaters 7 times..yes 7 times...I didn't figure out the end, till the 4th time. And I love the hippy guy who owns the junk yard..Last..if you watch the characterization of the mom and the young lad, you will see lots of similarities ...Also, directed by Brad Bird, he also did Ratatouille

'He's X-Rated and Animated'

Saw it in a theater when it first came out and knew that I was seeing something special. I've seen it a few times since; parts of it didn't age well, but overall it still holds up.

"Just a cartoon" with a bunch of ridiculously improbable scenarios, all to bring us to what real humans experience. That's what got me; the reality, the pain, the joy, the hope, underneath all the rest.

Terrific animation, funny, and a good story with an environmental message. Plus, "Down to Earth" by Peter Gabriel.

1. HEAVY METAL - Euro comics are sure...different.

2. FRITZ THE CAT - Well, I wasn't nearly old enough at the time to have watched that and yet, here we are.

3. AKIRA - Mind offically blown! Hey Japan, WTF?

4. TOKYO GODFATHERS - Great, great fun and everybody gets a happy ending.

5. GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES - Yeah, pretty strong material here. Traumatic is what this is.

6. BLOOD - Kinda short and left a lot for you to figure out on your own. Still, how was this not a bonafide hit?

7. NEON GENESIS EVANGELION: THE END - This is the true 2nd ending with the sick amounts of over the top action/violence and mind fuckery that we demand in our cartoons.

8. SOUTH PARK: UNCUT - One of the few time I've honestly laughed uncontrollably at a theatre. Just crazy, crazy nonsense that delivered.

*Honorable mention to the Ghost in the Shell movies. Just too much jibba-jabba about searching for one's true humanity and not nearly enough shoot-em-in-the face from Major Kusinagi. The major's back story is filled in decades later in the GITS anime series about her being plane crash survivor/orphan.

and also big ups for "Daffy Doodles." ALL of the Chuck Jones Coyote/Road Runner cartoons and the immortal trilogy of "Rabbit Seasoning" "Duck, Rabbit, Duck" and "Rabbit Fire." And pretty much anything Tex Avery directed, though the Screwy Squirrel cartoons, "King Size Canary" and "Bad Luck Blackie" are special favorites of mine.

Bacall To Arms

As a J.R.R. Tolkien nut, I loved the Ralph Bakshi animated version of Lord Of The Rings from 1978. It was an ambitious effort and Bakshi ran out of money and the last portion has production problems. But I found it visually stunning for its time.
