Came home today with a new project horse who has the worst name ever!
Devil's Hole
The Jockey Club requires every single horse they've registered to have a unique name so they can get a bit outlandish... Clearly this mare has gotten trapped by that unfortunate rule so I'd like to give her a new barn name, maybe one that isn't so obviously slutty.
She's a "redhead" as we say in the business - a bright copper chestnut however she has some light white speckles all throughout her coat which you can only see if you get up close (so technically she's a red roan).
Here's her pedigree:
http://www.pedigreequery.com/devils+hole
So I'm toying with Snow (a play off her sire's name - Indy Snow), Lucy (from Lucille Ball - another famous redhead), or Annie (like the orphaned charmer in the musical).
Any other names come to mind? I'm not really sold on any of the ones so far...

Just a thought....

Great suggestion. Thanks!

My two cents: "Anna" after the feisty red-haired princess in Frozen. She has a lot of snow and princess names in her family tree.

(23,272 posts)She's impressively bred but was a total flop at the track. Four starts and about $400 lifetime winnings
She's fast enough for what we do though and after seeing her free jump, its clear she inherited the legendary jumping of the Nearco and Bold Ruler lines.
Now does she have the heart and courage...? That is the big question. Hopefully she's got that from the other incredible horses back there in her genes.
I'll post pics once I get a chance.

(56,829 posts)that is a rather unfortunate name, isn't it? had a BLM burro named Lucy once. she was named after a crabby aunt of the Husband's.
I can't do names for animals (or children!) until I get to know their personalities.
had a roan gelding once with the obvious name of Frosty, that would go with the snow theme too. Sprinkles comes to mind too.
Rojo/a, Rosa or the diminutive Rosalita for a couple Spanish possibilities. Nieve is snow.

(23,272 posts)For now she's "the redhead".
I'm loving a lot of the suggestions on this thread though.
Edited to add an interesting article about breeding, genetics and horses. I know you breed cattle so you already understand the issues but thought you might be interested in how its starting to percolate in the TB sporthorse world (where you think the dumb shit breeders would have learned from millennia of experience!) The hideous public breakdowns of famous racehorses is finally getting through to the idiots at the Jockey Club...

(23,272 posts)Unfortunately she's stuck with the registered name to compete. There's big $$ in off track thoroughbreds in eventing but you have to use their registered name.
And yup, she's got a princess pedigree. She's pretty impressive in RL but her genes will hopefully mean she really shines in action.
I'm not sure if you're interested in breeding but this article is an eye opener about the track breakdowns like Barbaro and Ruffian, and how its related to genetics...

The breeding really does matter.

(18,567 posts)The author was sounding alarms that it would bring an end to thoroughbred racing. I recollect Cigar had a hoof problem in the Belmont, too. It would probably be a good idea to breed more for toughness and less for speed. But that's a long-term goal.
Any horse with Slew and Alydar among her ancestors (to say nothing of their ancestors, lol) ought to be pretty useful in getting around the track.

(22,413 posts)The dam's name is Cents Off.
How about something like "Snowy Red Cent" or "Pennies in the Snow" ?
Arugula Latte
(50,566 posts)Wow.
I was thinking of something with "Penny" in it because her mare is Cents Off and she is reddish like a penny. Maybe "Penny Roll"?
Because she's a red roan I thought of "Cinnamon" too. (I've always wanted to name a red roan bunny "Cinnabun."
Cinnamon Roll? See, I'm on a roll role!
Or "Cinnamon Sugar" (That one would definitely describe her color.)
Another name to think about -- "Rory" means "red" in Gaelic.

Good day Ruby Thursday
I'm going to give this name to you.

(23,272 posts)That could change though... Knowing us.
I took a snip of video of her as she came back from hacking around the place. This is her second day here and she handled everything really well. A little distracted and tense but overall pretty levelheaded.
https://m.
The Big Bang you hear is coming from my neighbors place where two horses are in separate paddocks and they're fighting over a joint fence line. My husband's commenting that they're going to take that gate apart sooner or later, and I'm agreeing.

(14,881 posts)or if you stick with Ginger, "Ginger Spice?"
What a good girl she's being -- very level headed indeed.
riderinthestorm
(23,272 posts)She quite easily yields to the bit walk-trot-canter (and wowsa, she really has a canter, not just a disorganized gallop), which is pretty amazing since the racehorses are trained to lean into the bridle to go faster. As you can see, my husband rode her in almost a two-point expecting her to explode but aside from the distractibility, she was excellent today hacking about.
Her gaits are above average. We free jumped her and honestly, that's really going to be her selling point - huge jump, tremendous bascule and perfect form which follows of course from her natural balance. Clean pre-purchase so hopefully no lameness surprises ahead.
I like this one quite a bit. I hope we get to keep her for a while.
(As you know everything's for sale and we've had the "good" fortune to usually have them sell pretty quickly once they start competing)
Will be thinking of you as you await the arrival of your new girl. Hope the weather holds up...

(14,881 posts)I'd love to see the trot and canter. Also see how she walks on a free rein once she's settled in and totally relaxed. She won't waste energy getting overly exicted.
She's not built to run, she's built more like an all-arounder. Too much bone for racing, and bunchier muscling for carrying power instead of flat muscles for speed. She looks like a super eventing prospect. She'll probably love her new career.
