More than likely he just couldn't get a medical
The FAA only revokes your pilot's certificate if you do something really bad. For most certificate levels you have to pass a flight physical administered by an FAA approved doctor. At my age, I have to go in every two years for a physical. If you don't pass the physical, you still have your certificate, but you just can't exercise it. If he kept his medical until 80, he was doing pretty damn good. I hope I'm so lucky.
