Meet the new Ghostbuster crew

Ghostbusters Cast: Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon

The new Ghostbusters, headlined by four women, has reportedly been cast. According to multiple reports, the quartet will be Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. McCarthy is said to have signed on to the project, while the studio is reportedly in final negotiations with the other three potential stars.

Director Paul Feig made things all but official on Tuesday, tweeting a picture of the four actresses (see right). It’s expected that the four comedic performers will be on board in time for a summer shoot in New York.

While it’s been known for some time that the new Ghostbusters would revolve around a female cast, leading to months of speculation about the possible lineup, nothing had been finalized. Wiig and McCarthy’s names repeatedly came up as potential stars, but McKinnon and Jones are more of a surprise.

The stars have some built-in familiarity through “Saturday Night Live,” where McKinnon and Jones are current performers in the cast, Wiig is a recent alum, and McCarthy is a multiple-time host. McCarthy and Wiig also co-starred in the smash hit Bridesmaids, which was directed by Feig.

I don't know why this is such a big deal. There have been other movies with female casts.

That movie about the pants, Bridesmaids, Steel Magnolias, Sex and The City, Mean Girls, The Women.

The Bechdel Test, sometimes called the Mo Movie Measure or Bechdel Rule is a simple test which names the following three criteria: (1) it has to have at least two women in it, who (2) who talk to each other, about (3) something besides a man. The test was popularized by Alison Bechdel's comic Dykes to Watch Out For, in a 1985 strip called The Rule. For a nice video introduction to the subject please check out The Bechdel Test for Women in Movies on feministfrequency.com.

If it gets decent reviews, I will go see it.

Is remaking the Odd Couple. I think I would rather stab myself in the eye with scissors than watch this movie.

Speaking as a huge fan of the original TV series (and play and movie), I can't believe how terrible the new version looks. Just watching a scene or two on Youtube of the new one makes you realize how good Jack and Tony were back in the day.

I'm a huge fan of Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones on the current cast of SNL.

But Melissa McCarthy is a one-note character. She'll play some obnoxious slob of a woman almost identical to the last 5 movie roles she has had. It was funny as hell when she won an Oscar Nomination doing it for 'Bridesmaid'. But fast-forward 4-5 years she now gets razzie awards for doing the same part again and again. Unless they find a new way to use McCarthy in this movie she will bring down the whole movie.

But you are right, that they better give her better lines, because the last few movies felt like she was doing a comic ad libbing. Not the worst I have ever seen, but it's not something you can keep doing over and over again without negative results.

The only one note actor that I give kudos because he can pull off playing the same person, whether it's comic or drama, is Ice Tea. (i.e. I never grow tired of the character.)

....I do have to question why we feel the need to remake and reboot and revive the same movies over and over and over again.

There has to be some original ideas out there, right?

I read it in my daughter's research paper for her movie class. They retread them because the plots are already proven to appeal to a certain audience so the company doesn't have to take a risk on some new blockbuster that will crash and burn. And, they are taking advantage of the fact that young audiences haven't seen the old movies yet. So they pluck in actors that have generic appeal to that demographic. Rachel McAdams is a good example of someone that can carry young female audiences for Romance retreads, for example.

Edited to add: They may already own the movie rights and have the license to make changes.
