Actually, I love the late 60s and early 70s Mopars.

(51,122 posts)Except the tire chains (I have thousand dollar snow rated tires), and the candles (I often have alcohol to do the trick onboard), and the snacks, (alcohol isn't a snack?).
Otherwise, my ride is pretty manly.

(17,980 posts)I thought those things were obsolete now. Manly man now has his $600 SmartPhone all dialed in and mounted on his dashboard.
Does anyone even remember those Thomas Bros maps? I used to swear by those, but it's been years since I've had one.

(27,457 posts)GPS will tell you where you are and where to go to get there. But a road atlas is essential to finding alternate routes to avoid construction and accidents (not the minor detours either).

(2,682 posts)I saw the limitations of a Garmin or other GPS. She did the driving (my mistake -- she's awful) she did a good job of following the driving instructions (Seattle to Denver and back through Utah), she had no idea where we were in relation to other states or in the country in general. She related only to the area displayed on the screen. Although we were a couple of days on the road, she really has no concept of the distance we traveled.
I travel with a GPS, but I also travel with a RandMcNally road atlas. I also have an emergency bag in the trunk -- hand-cranked radio/flashlight, change of clothes, extra sweatshirt and shoes, water bottles, fleece blanket, jumper-cables and two axes (one small, one large). Oh, and most importantly TOILET PAPER.
