That this book is only considered a romance because the male lead is a billionaire. If the guy was some dude living in a trailer park or cheap apartment struggling to make a living - this would be an episode of 'Criminal Minds' instead.

(72,300 posts)I have not read the book nor have I seen the movie.
Wounded Bear
(58,682 posts)Seeing the movie did not interest me in the slightest.
From what I understood, it is basically a more hard core porn version of a typical bodice ripper.

(23,340 posts)The male lead just happens to be incredibly rich, and handsome, but wounded, and needs just the right spunky woman to complete him.
The plot of several thousand books.

And there is a blog ring devoted to Fifty Shades as abuse.

I saw that on Facebook today!
I've no idea; haven't read the book and won't see the movie.

(57,936 posts)One book I will never read, and one movie I will never watch. What a waste of precious time and money -- that book.

(30,947 posts)Thus, I am not wasting any time. And I did not waste any money on the book as it was given to me.

(8,421 posts)Not interested in the book. The film trailer is all over the TV so you can't avoid it. Looks to me like the guy gets a 'pass' because he is rich (and can whisk the heroine away in his own private helicopter). The ultimate Cinderella complex story.

(1,693 posts)He's 27, incredibly good-looking, a billionaire and hung like a horse. Wow, really have to suspend belief that any woman (or man) could fall for him. Must be an amazing book.

(43,890 posts)I did see the movie and, to be honest, it bored me. It bored my wife too who saw it with me.
The characters are nothing more than cartoons.
Christian Grey is nothing more than Hank Rearden from 'Atlas Shrugged' with Indiana Jones' whip.

(95,337 posts)He had a PI track down everything about her including
Complete credit history
Work History
Cell Phone number including the ability to track her based on her cell phone
Account numbers (he could at will deposit money into her account)
He showed up out of the blue at the hardware store where she worked (at the time she was living in Vancouver, Washington but he lives in Portland Oregon). He also showed up at the bar where she was at after she had drunk dialed him. She had not told him where she was at but he was able to track her because of something on her cell phone.
Yes I read the book but more like skimmed them in was so poorly written and the other 2 books got worse as they went along. (I admit I wanted to see what the big deal was) If the guy wasn't a billionaire he would have been a criminal. Sure they lived happily ever after but lets face it, I'd have better luck being struck by lightening while buying the winning powerball ticket that would net me $400million then finding true love of a hottie billionaire who is kinda messed up in the head because he likes to abuse women.

(28,552 posts)...but I'm familiar with the basic story.
My interpretation would be "a woman can get a rich handsome husband if she is willing to pay the price". funny that would resonate with so many.
I know, harsh.

(3,747 posts)It's a pretty messed-up book. It's going to set the BDSM community back a bit, too, imo.
This thread has a good take on it:

(95,337 posts)And in the end if he wasn't a billionaire hottie the relationship wouldn't have been consensual and he would have been nothing but a very creepy stalker.
