My Oma. [Updated April 11, 2015] My Oma has left us.

Last edited Sat Apr 11, 2015, 11:37 AM - Edit history (1)

Below is my post from February. She did recover from her last illness, but she was tired.

Last night she went to sleep and passed on in gentle peace. I am still waiting for my sisters and Mom to figure out the funeral arrangements and then I will be heading to NY to be with family.

If there is a heaven, I would like to believe that she is with my Opa and all of her 8 bothers and sisters.

Thank you everyone for your kind words in this post. I didn't want to make a new OP, so I just updated this one.

***************************OP**********************
She is 95 years old. She is not going well this afternoon.

I now live here in Alexandria, Virginia and she is in a nursing home Rhinebeck NY. She is not doing well, she has pneumonia and I got a call from my sister that her blood pressure is dropping. WE are all from Long Island NY. Wellm Oma is actually from Brmehaven, Germany. She came to the States about 1921?

It doesn't look good. This woman has the lives of about 2-3 cats. I told my sister that we would wait until tomorrow to see what happens before we get in the truck and go north.

My Oma. I share her with my two sisters. And I have one niece (almost 21) and two nephews that call her Gross Oma. This is a painting I did of her about 10 years ago.

I based it off many pictures but eventually used this photo:

3. Thank you ITW.

I moved in with with her after my third year of college. It was a year after my Opa passed away (in 1986). I commuted to and from school and later a job in NYC.

A few years after that, I rented the upstairs apartment of her house with my future first husband. (that was about 1990) We paid rent and helped to make sure she was ok. It was fun. On my days off we would watch One Life to Live.

Former fist husband and I later moved to the hudson valley and she later (around 2000) came to live upstate with my Mom when her ability to care for herself went down hill.

She is 95 years old. I don't know what will happen, but this time, this time seems different.

I am so very lucky to have her in my life. I am so fortunate to be 47 and have an Oma that I could share grown up stuff with.

9. Thank you for sharing your memories with us.

Rhinebeck NY is just across the river, not very far from here. I believe I know the nursing home where your Oma is now. Patient care is excellent there.

I'll be thinking of you and your family at this time.
May the near future be a gentle time for all.

2. I was Grandmas girl

My sister was Poppas...worked beautifully. Grandma left near 8 years ago. I still miss her. Your Oma was blessed, and you got a gift.

4. Thank you for sharing

and I'm sorry about your Oma...your love for her shines in your post.

I was Grandma's girl, and she was almost like a second mother to me. When she would introduce me to her friends, she would always add "and we practically raised her."

Hugs to you and your Oma!

7. Thank you.

I know I drove Oma crazy. I also know that she came to understand this new generation. Boy was she mad whn I moved in with future first husband. She would not talk to me.

And then came my sister who was pregnant. And was not married…. that made my living in sin — seem innocent.

The beauty is that in the end, Oma simply loved it all even when she disapproved. truthfully, after a while, she told me — I don't really care about anything, as long as you are happy and everyone is healthy.

12. Bit of Dutch in the family?

I live in Holland with my Dutch wife and we have grandkids. We speak English to the kids. But the other set of grandparents are Dutch and they get the titles Opa and Oma.

Our grandkids call my wife Granny. I didn't want to be called Granddad so I said they should call me Grumpy. One of my daughter's kids wasn't old enough to pronounce "Grumpy" and it came out as "Blumy". So, I'm Grumpy to one set of grandkids and Blumy to another. I actually love that.

That's a great photo!!!

Groetjes aan Oma.

22. Thank you, everyone!

We are forgoing a funeral for her and will be celebrating her life on April 25.

If anyone is in around Dutchess county — y'all are welcome to come and enjoy German food, music and laughter!

23. Cherish the memories. 95!

Must be something in the water over there. My wife's mom, the baby of the family, will be 88 this year. Her sisters all lived to be in their mid nineties.

You look like a big happy family in the photo. No one can take that away from you. In the end, the memories have to sustain us. May yours be eternal!

26. I am so very sorry for the loss of your oma, Raine.

Your painting is awesome. I love how it catches the smile in her eyes, and her warm and fun smile that seems to say, "you're not going to put anything past me, I know."

My sincere sympathy
