The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhat was your coolest car? Mine: '63 MGB.
In British Racing Green.
Wire wheels, knock-off hubs.
Knock-off hubs: Instead of lug nuts to hold the wheels on, the wire wheels had one flanged, center, screw-on chromed hub nut. The car came with a rubber mallet to 'knock off' the flanges on the hub and knock it back on.
Genius.
I'm 6' 3" and it's the only car I've owned that had more legroom than I needed.
If I put the seat all the way back, I could barely reach the pedals.
My second coolest was a red '65 Karmann Ghia convertible.
Underpowered, but a lot of fun.

Didn't she like the car? Or maybe she couldn't drive a stick shift.
lastlib
(23,213 posts)(But that's another story). Actually, she drove the family farm truck around the farm almost from the time she could see over the dashboard, so the manual transmission was no problem. I guess maybe the insurance/upkeep on the Spitfire were too much for their budget, or something--who knows?

(29,414 posts)Fire engine red, and yet, I was rear-ended twice by people "claiming" they couldn't see me! It was basically my car in the early 80s, driving it back and forth to college and university. Great fun to drive, though the 2nd gear synchro was worn out, and you had to double-clutch to downshift from 3rd. Got pretty good at it on some neighborhood curved streets
My first car was also my favorite, because it was tough, versatile, and quite fun to drive (not as fast as the MG, but that couldn't haul a full-size drafting table, either.) That was my 1988 VW Fox Wagon. I'd probably still have it today if I hadn't gotten in a wreck on the freeway (fourth in a pile-up that had just happened on the other side of an overpass, so I didn't know it was there.)
I don't have an available image of my own, but this is it, even the same color:
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)The first brand new car I bought was an '87 (I think) Fox station wagon that looked exactly like that, except it was dark blue. We put well over 250,000 miles on it and never had any real problem with it, other than that on long drives (800 miles or more), it had a weird problem with static electricity build up which would cause the lights to dim until it blinked and everything was OK again. Weird design flaw which it shared with the European Polo apparently.
We had that car for more than 25 years, spanning some eventful years in our married life, good and bad. I nearly wept when we donated it to charity and the tow truck took it away. It almost felt like giving a beloved family pet to a vivisectionist.
I'm afraid I never had a really cool car, though.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)No, it didn't turn heads, but maybe if anyone ever saw me sliding mine sideways (coast in neutral, then throw on the handbrake with a hard right turn) into order to perfectly line up my rear with my parking space, that might have add some coolness to it
Still, I really did fit a full-size drafting table (6' x 4' top) including the dismantled trestle support, into the back of that car. To me, that's cooler than any "supercar" (Top Gear guys actually love hatchbacks, too, so we're in good company.)
Forgot to add, that I laughed out loud at your mention of static charge build-up That's my personal, physical body problem, but didn't ever have it with my car. It did have a weird electrical problem that took my shop three days to trace down and fix. Luckily, it was on an extended warranty, so I didn't have to repay the price of the car for mechanic-time. (The wiring in one spot rested on a sharp metal support, and had worn through the insulation, causing an intermittent problem with the lights.)

(204 posts)Guess that is why I am so broke now.
That being said I think my favorite would depend on the day you asked.

1995 Mustang Cobra w/aftermarket turbo
1927 T-Roadster
1967 Polara 500

Fastcars
(204 posts)It had an upgraded turbo and fuel system and one had to be extremely cautious when the roads were the slightest bit damp, or even when the tires were cold. Boost came on hard and when the wheels started spinning it would really come on strong. Too much throttle at any speed would induce massive wheel spin. More than once it crossed me up on the interstate trying to get around traffic.

(12,132 posts)My first car was my coolest car: 1968 Pontiac Firebird
Mine had honeycomb wheels off a 78 Trans-Am, air shocks to get the fenders up off the 15x10 G60's in the back. 15x8 in the front. Also, I bought mine at a junk yard and the vinyl roof was in bad shape so I stripped it off and sanded it down and repainted the whole car verdoro green. (no small amount of bondo in there too)
I paid 500 bucks total for the body and a running 350 motor from a Buick LaSabre. My stepfather had to build custom engine mounts of aluminum to get it to fit right. Don't go thinking he did it out of any kind of love for me. He just liked building cars and my mom made him make it run.
I got the car at 15 and worked on it until I was 17. A week after I got my license I totaled it. Got one good date out of it though.
I'm 51 now and my next car will be a new black Camaro and I'm gonna find a company that will print the hood stripes in my clan tartan. I thin it will look cool and if it doesn;t I won't give a shit. lol.

In Dallas in the late 70s if your buddy said he got a new car the only thing you needed ask was "What Color?". By default it was a Trans-Am or a Camaro.
lol, I knew guys with other cars but I knew a lot more guys with Trans-Ams and Camaros.
BUT if GM announced they were going to make a Firebird version of the new Camaro I would get that instead.

(5,477 posts)Originally had the 1.7l engine, but I had a burned exhaust valve on #3 cylinder, so I bought a 1.8l long block.
Most fun car *ever* to drive. With the mid-engine, it had a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. Sitting was pretty much almost straight legs, and about 6" above the ground (I used to look out my window at the other cars' door handles at stoplights). You could make a 90 degree turn without any 'diving' at all - it just sort of flowed around the corners, at speed. Small, light, and maneuverable - these cars *still* beat a lot of modern stuff in various types of racing (involving handling).
Standing next to it, the roof was at the level of my sternum.
It finally rusted out too much to bother with, so I gave it to a guy in Portland on a sort of 'pay it forward' forum on a motorcycle message board.
I took this picture the day before he came up with the trailer to take it away. It was in pretty sad shape by then...

Not a great photo--but the only one I have that survived our fire.
My oldest son--the one who now drives autocross here in NC--learned to drive a manual transmission on that car.
I still remember taking him out to the local mall parking lot on Sunday mornings so he could get the feel of the clutch
and learning to shift. Me? I learned to drive a manual transmission on a WWII era Willys Jeep that my dad used
in the orchard when I was in high school.

As I recall, that was the last year that Germany made the Opel, and why he picked it (not because it was the last year, only that it was still German-made.)
And yes, I did get to drive it, and it was great in the corners. He also got minor hits (rear-ended, passenger door punched in) because the idiot drivers said they couldn't see him. Bright lime-green, long before lime-green was a popular color in this country, and they said they couldn't see him! My first real sports car, and I got to drive it totally unrestrained on the autobahn for three years. Not only was it fast, but it was so cool and competent at handling anything from driving in downtown Frankfurt, to blowing away certain Porcsches and Mercedes on the autobahn. It could cruise comfortably at 260 KPH down the A8 autobahn from Frankfurt to Munich easily. Still love that car, and the new BMWs are only a shadow of this one,

(12,017 posts)i drove mine to a total of 320,000 miles and it was running like a top the day i let her go. and that little five-speed was a little peppy and the thing was pretty nimble. at less than 2000 lbs it got pretty good gas mileage. i had to replace the clutch and master cylinder and do some other pretty minor stuff. did my own breaks, shocks and tune-ups. now, i look in an engine compartment and i think, "that yellow thing over there must be the dipstick... maybe."
