(38,334 posts)... but it couldn't compete with the sourdough and wine cultures that infest this place. We grow grapes and apples. I was baking sourdough then. Some of those wild yeasts and their bacterial partners are very aggressive.
The only reliable brews here, sans sulfites and other sterile brewing techniques, are ginger ale and apple cider based "adult beverages" fizzed up in two liter pop bottles.

I also buy the commercial stuff. I have brewed it, but it never tasted nearly as good. Home brewing is very popular though. I guess other people have more success at it.
It's much more expensive purchasing the bottles - that's the problem. But like you said, it's low calorie and fizzy. The perfect replacement for soda. Personally, I think it tastes better than soda.
I also get a mild buzz from it. Something halfway between the well-being you get from sipping tea and the buzz from a light beer.
