I'll bet Spock knew how many holes it took to fill the Albert Hall, and a bunch of other cool shit.

Internet has been down at the house and I have been going to the Library for WiFi, so news of Leonard's passing came to me a bit late. No TV either, just pretty much shut off from anything resembling "news."

What an original, what an icon. Icons aren't supposed to die, but somehow they do, reminding us of our own mortality.

R.I.P., Spock.

1. 4000.

It's in the lyrics. "4000 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire".

That's also what Google says: https://www.google.com/search?q=how+many+holes+does+it+take+to+fill+the+albert+hall

Spock probably also knew who the walrus was, whether or not Paul was dead, and whether or not "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was really about LSD.

2. I think the 4000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire were potholes,

at least, according to my memory of the documentary "It Was 20 Years Ago Today" (which was broadcast on PBS 20 years after the debut of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band).

5. That's correct, but those were the holes being referenced.

It's figurative, not literal. The BBC used to use the Albert Hall to illustrate large amounts of something such as crowd size. They'd say things like "there were enough demonstrators to fill two Albert Halls". Lennon needed a line in the lyrics and this BBC usage of the Albert Hall came to mind.

6. So that's the rest of the story

I had known for some time where the "4000 holes" reference came from, but I had no idea what that had to do with the Albert Hall-- until now

7. I was really pleased to learn that.

Knowing it adds something to the song for me. I suppose the reference was obvious to Brits at the time, but us Yanks obviously need it explained.

4. ...

Now I gotta go listen to the song again.

But you're right...it was 4000 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire.

Love that song.

8. Spock knew how many angels could dance on the head of a pin, too.

9. He knew who, who, who wrote the book of love.

That was the basis for "Amok Time".
