Alligator Mating Season Is A Noisy Time In Florida
At a time when beaches and theme parks draw boisterous crowds, Floridas alligators simply want a little peace and quieta comfortable log or a sunlit bank on which to bask uninterrupted. Theyre resting in preparation for the spring, getting ready to begin an active, noisy mating period that begins about now and during which members of both sexes bellow from the swamps and defend their territories.

3 species of crocodilians exist in Florida. The American alligator (above) which occurs in freshwater habitats, is the only one found throughout the state. Ever hear an alligator bellow? It's not a sound you'll soon forget. Click to hear one-- and you can even download the sound as a cellphone ringtone. http://enature.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=19c6e3405dc59584446e1a4d8&id=cf10401eb6&e=028ee0accc

Well, when we first bought this farm, we'd hear them down in the swamp. That sound carries - the swamp is at the back of our 60 acres, about a quarter of a mile from the house. After a couple of bad droughts, we stopped hearing them - I know we had some smaller gators travel across our ridge to the next watershed but the big guys may have traveled south down the watershed that ends up in the St. Marks River system.
