(6,261 posts)For what it's worth, September/October is the best time of the year to be in the Pacific Northwest too. We usually still have decent weather then, not too hot and the rainy season won't have started yet, and the Fall colours are gorgeous.

(85,168 posts)Greece is amazing if you haven't been there. Tokyo is culturally very different. Rio is another different type of option. You can get a flight without a transfer to there. Happy travels!

(22,413 posts)Do you want to see historical sights? Would you like down time to just sun bathe and swim? Do you like to hike and be outdoors? Or maybe you prefer fine art and theater?
Once you give us some ideas as to what you like, we might be able to come up with some great ideas for you.

London
Paris
Interlochen, Switzerland
Juan le Pins, France
Rouen, France
Venice
Rome
then back to Paris and London, and still, time to see only so very little.
But my conclusion was this: Washington DC is the most beautiful city of them all.
I suppose to be honest I must admit that on Mom's side, I am 3rd generation born in DC on her Dad's side, and 4th on her mother's, and our Irish family was extensive and all across the city for generations. I loved hearing my mother's stories of life in DC in the 30s and 40s, when she played in the Capitol building and on its lawns, where her uncle was a gardener, when she walked to the fireworks quite some distance across the city by herself as a child, or took the bus all around town. To hear about the times when the city was segregated, not by race, but in the Greek section, the Polish section, etc, and cross-marrying was a big taboo... that's what taught me how idiotic racism was, because by the 60s, no one really cared if a Greek married and Irishman, or whatever. Mom always said DC was the most beautiful city in the world, and having seen just a bit of the world now, a tiny bit, I concur. And I could live in the museums there. The free concerts, and other free public activities. The closeness to Mt Vernon, and Jefferson's two homes, and so many other historic places. I grew up just over the city line in Maryland in the 1960s. and we would regularly go downtown, where all the time there was a march for this, that, or the other thing, and so, I grew up seeing political protest as normal, healthy, typical, and even, as an obligation of citizenry.
Ach! You have me so homesick now, stuck now in goobersville, south central Pennsylvania! But soon I will be taking my grandson and granddaughter to the Smithsonian again, and get a little visit there.
If I were to return to Europe, there is never enough time for Paris or London. I did not like Italy at all, and in my experience, women were treated incredibly rudely there. Astonishingly so. Everyone in France was marvelous, and far more friendly than London. Venice is not a good place for people like me who run on the claustrophobic side; the streets close in on you in a tight maze. The Riviera and the Caribbean are just a true delight, to float on that crystal water was an experience I was glad to have, and would do again...the French Riviera. Switzerland and especially the lakes in Interlochen is of a beauty so incredible it almost seems to be sci-fi, especially the color of the lakes, but wow, is it expensive and the people not as warm and inviting.
But DC, I could go there a zillion more times.

(18,497 posts)And the worst of the crowds have fallen off because kids are back in school.
My bf and I also hiked into the Havasupai reservation.

Absolutely stunning place. The waters are really that blue and there are four waterfalls. It is about a nine mile hike into the campsites, but there is also a horseback option as well as a helicopter you can take.
Another great trip was a state park in the FL keys. If you do this option and camp take a site on the the Atlantic side, not the Gulf side. But the Gulf side does have cottage sites.

September can be iffy for that because of hurricane season.
Cumberland Island National Seashore is in GA near the FL border. There are areas you can go there and be on the beach and not see another person all day. There is camping, but there is also a resort hotel.
Oh, and the island has wild horses.

But also September and hurricane season. Though coast of GA is not generally directly affected by storm season there could be some generally rainy, windy weather that could make a beach vacation a challenge.
Yeah. I favor outdoors and camping. lol
Hope you have a wonderful time!
KMOD
(7,906 posts)I also love the outdoors and camping.
Thank you!!!!

(18,497 posts)Cumberland Island is accessible only by ferry. That is what has kept it largely unspoiled.
The State park in the keys is called Bahai Honda. There are snorkeling trips to reefs from there.
We did not get to go for that because of storm season.
Weather was bright and sunny but currents and winds were still too bad off shore.
There were plenty of bright pretty fish to see just off the beach though.
Then you'd also have Key West and Key Largo to see.
The African Queen is a tourist attraction on Key Largo as well.
(I have no clue why)

(17,055 posts)stay in Pigeon Forge, TN. Lots of nice cabins for rent. Lots of shows to see. Lots of good food to eat. Dollywood isn't bad. Hop, skip & a jump from Gatlinburg. But the best part of it all is taking 2 or 3 day trips driving up into the Smoky Mtns. It took us 3 day trips in order to see all there was to see. We packed up the cooler with food & it was a good thing we did because that mountain air can sure make you hungry. It is the most visited national park for good reason, yet it wasn't crowded at all. Simply beautiful. Temps should still be plenty mild at that time of year.

(5,217 posts)Is a great month to travel in the northern hemisphere. I'm near Saratoga too. Locally I would do Mohonk Mountain House, Montreal or Quebec City. Greater US. I was going to suggest a house boat on Lake Powell but the western drought leaves it with not much water. There are some great train rides in the western US. The desert southwest is beautiful in September. Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion park are all awesome as is Monument Valley. You could see them all in a 7 day road trip.
I haven't been overseas much but Iceland, Swiss Alps, and the Orient Express train are on my bucket list.
Have fun wherever it is you finally choose.
