My daughter went to the house and found him. He had a heart attack. He was 52, she is 35. They had been together for a few years, but married less than two years.
He was a wonderful man, and they were perfect for each other. I am in the Midwest, and trying to get to Mass. as soon as possible. This is so unexpected and horrible.

(5,604 posts)I know (from being a licensed funeral director) that first there is a lot of shock (obviously), and then confusion. But go slow, there is no rush in making arrangements, and coming to terms with this new reality. I'm so sorry, find strength, and if you have some to spare share it with others, and you and your family will pull through and heal together. Sorry for your loss.

(8,646 posts)What a shock for your daughter. The same thing happened to my aunt and her husband - she found him. He left her with 2 small children. This may be premature, but when the shock wears off, grief support groups helped my aunt tremendously.
Huge hugs to you and your family during this difficult time.

(26,001 posts)Two at once?
I've had a pretty good year after losing my dad in 2013 (more or less expected, but still...) and then nearly losing my mom (completely unexpected) a couple of weeks later...
She, luckily, is on the mend (though minus one leg now!)
So having almost lost two-at-once, I can feel for ya. If I'm reading your own statement right...!

(33,269 posts)Hope you can make arrangements to get to your daughter easily. She will
be needing all the support she can get.
We had a friend who dropped dead of a massive heart attack when he was 49--an ER doc--
working out at a hotel. Two surgeons were working out next to him, so he had CPR before
he was even on the floor, to no effect. So, sometimes, there is just nothing that can be done.
Don't let your daughter beat herself up with "maybe if I'd been there" kind of thinking.
I am so, so sorry for you and your family.

(59,941 posts)That was almost me. I came within a few hours of dying of a heart attack at 52. Dumb luck saved me, as I didn't know how close I was. That was 11 years ago. I can't imagine not having lived these past 11 years, so I can well empathize with the two of you, and know full well what your son in law lost.
