An alert driver and a California Highway Patrol officer rescued a small owl on Highway 221 in Napa that was unable to fly and was being attacked by crows, authorities said.
Around 1 p.m. Friday, a motorist flagged down Officer Garrett Ray near Napa Valley Corporate Way after he spotted the owl and put it in the cab of his truck, a spokeswoman with the CHP said.
Ray noticed the bird could not fly, so he brought it back to the CHP office in Napa and called around to find out who could take the animal, officials said.
He then took the owl to Silverado Veterinary Hospital, where it will be cared for until it can be returned to the wild.

Not fond of them.

I know, they have to eat but that's one facet of Nature I'd prefer not to delve into.
That's a sweet photo of the CHP officer and the tiny little bundle of owl.

(19,926 posts)In the morning I heard a bunch of crows cawing loudly over and over so I went outside to see what it was about. There was a tiny possum up a telephone pole just crouching in fear and about twenty crows on the telephone lines and nearby trees just cawing and cawing. So I yelled at them a bit and they flew away. As I got ready for work I saw the possum make its way across the telephone lines, hopefully to safety. At least I didn't hear or see any crows attempting to go after it during the next hour.
I imagine they were all yelling "jump! jump!" to the possum.

(33,688 posts)I love owls. They are my favorite birds. They always seem like the cats of the bird world to me for some strange reason.
Must be the eyes and the seemingly intelligent expression.

We're part of Nature too -- we seem to forget that. A lot.
At one time in our past, we might have competed against the crows for that owl as a meal -- instead of the cute story that it turned out to be in our present. Or, we might have saved it way back in prehistoric times just like now, and that may be how animals became domesticated by humans over time. Saving the young ones from certain death.
- If the officer finds his motorcycle seat stained with bird-droppings in the future, he should look around for crows.....
