My husband takes the two dogs to the trail every morning for a run. It has to be raining, snowing, or below zero for them to miss a run.
This morning, the Australian Shepherd, the smaller of the pair, cornered a half-grown coon. Our Lab mix ran up to help her. Our Lab broke the coon's spine, but my husband had to finish the coon off. In the melee, the coon bit off part of the Lab's ear. The vet does not get in until 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, so doggie is at the vet right now. We are waiting to hear from her.
Our loopy, gentle ten-year-old Lab mix will now be battle-scarred.
KMOD, you are right to stay out of bars with raccoons. Avoid them at all costs!
I will keep you guys updated about our dog.

I'm still freaked out about my little raccoon friend. So yeah, still no plans to go to the bar with a freakin' raccoon.

(30,764 posts)She is wearing a ridiculous pink camouflage babushka with a bandage wrapped around it. The ear is sort of wrapped down to the top of her heard. They used adhesive on her ear rather than stitches. There will be less scarring that way. She has antibiotics, and will see the vet again on Monday.
The vet says that since both dogs are up to date on their shots, we do not need to worry about rabies. We take good care of them, and make sure they have their shots and exams.
Kinsey was very happy to see me. She is worn out right now, and sleeping quite soundly.

(5,604 posts)But then again if you have a loopy 10 year old lab, he's probably got enough character to go around. Sorry for the whole unfortunate situation, hopes for the best.
