(56,912 posts)trust me...I know. I lived through it and had the forced ignores to prove it. If there is a clique now, I don't see it. Maybe there is and, I am an outsider.

You are part of the lounge clique, Tuesday. Not to say there is anything wrong with that.
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)and tell me then who are the other clique members cos dang if I know --
cbayer
(146,218 posts)(and those have been the worst times), there has, in my experience, always been at least one clique.
It is primarily composed of long term lounge members.
There are lots of inside jokes. Posts often reference directly or indirectly other members of the group.
It is very difficult to break in. New people are generally ignored or even openly challenged.
If you are not a regular, posting something personal in there would probably be a big mistake.
If sufficiently motivated, people can join the club, but the amount of effort involved is pretty high.
I don't mean any of this as criticism. It is what it is. And it is, thankfully, a relatively peaceful and fun place for the members who are regulars right now.
The point really is about locking threads in GD because "they really belong in the lounge". If not a lounge regular, you probably really don't want your thread in the lounge.
I know I don't.
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)tried to word it as tactfully and as diplomatically as possible and the fact that you called me out as being a clique but, refuse to name whom are other members is just not cool.
If you can not see the smug attitude over there in H&M about the Lounge.
break in to what? a bunch of mixed nuts, is what I see.
what mistake? pixels on a screen...bfd.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)Clearly you receive my saying that you are part of the clique as an insult. It is not meant to be.
You are a member of a group, that's all. A clique is merely a relatively small group that interact with each other more regularly and more intensely than other members of group (partially stolen from wikipedia definition).
There are cliques in many of the groups around here.
I am not calling you out. You started a thread mocking the statement by another member that the lounge is cliquish. I responded to that by agreeing with him and noting that you were a part of it.
What is smug about that?
Anyway, I'm out of here. This is one of the reasons I don't come here.
I hope this doesn't impede our developing friendship.
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)nothing to do with me and you. I am honestly trying to understand this place called DU is all. and truly, I wish the Admin would shut down the Lounge. I have wished it for a very long time before, during and after all the crap from before. It is still here therefore I post here...that is all. I really do not know most of the people in here at all.
There are some few very long timers that I recognize and love, some I hate, some I love to hate and, some I hate to love.
It is like that for me all over DU.
I can not speak for anyone else.
I will talk to anyone, anywhere on DU....especially if it is a topic that interests me.
go, stay, come back .... whatever.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)I originally signed up for DU because I was simply looking to read more info on Democrats and democratic candidates as I am of a liberal bent. And I found all kinds of cools stuff to read all over the site - I am subscribed to several groups that I read but probably don;t post in as much as I post in here.
Which brings me to my point - I love buuuullllshittin. The lounge is the only place appropriate to come in and just bullshit about whatever.
I love Album of the day.
I love Alter a thread title.
I love MFM's pictures (And I'm sorry I didn't say it to him often enough) (BTW, I was here a month before I figured out he was a him)
I love food porn.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE it when people post parody threads of other lounge thread titles.
I love that CaliforniaPeggy calls everyone "My Dear..." It makes my day sometimes to be a dear of CaliforniaPeggy's.
I love pictures of cats and other animals with or without any explanation at all, whether they are lolcritters or just regular critters
I revel in the sheer ridiculousness of it all and mostly because I have been a clown all my life and I appreciate quality clowning around. I know sometimes I have to be serious in other groups and that's fine.
But please don't close my lounge because then I'd have to clown around in seriouser groups and I don't wanna get banned from this place.
Fortunately I'm dense enough not to get when people around me are being cliquey. Fuck it, I just wade on in uninvited. Because when it all boils down, there's no such thing as uninvited here. I patently refuse to recognize anyone as uninvited. Everyone is welcome to post in the lounge.
I haven't even been on DU for a full year and by no means do I think I'm an insider but that doesn't stop me from fully enjoying the shenanigans here in the lounge.
*NB: If I didn't mention anyone's specific shtick it's not because I don't love you too. I am a lazy clown and even more forgetful than lazy.
Peace and love to the loungies!
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)I wish they would meld GD and the Lounge...that thread in H&M and that word "clique" I guess just hit me wrong.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)I bristled at it myself but then I just told myself it was bullshit.
Which, I know, is mighty convenient for me, lol, but that's just the way I do.
And frankly, as long as I can be assured I won't get banned for being continually off-topic, it doesn't matter where these kind of posts go. SO I guess I should clarify that it doesn't matter to me if they take away the lounge, as long as they don;t take away the spirit of the Lounge.
But it just seems tidier to keep these non-political fun things out of GD or elsewhere.
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)round and round they go and somehow The Lounge is like some big trash heap for what is not deemed GDworthy. fuck that noise. pisses me off.
yes...SPIRIT!!!!
and YES we take our spirit with us no matter where in DU we are.
and they need to just deal with it and get a grip.
and some of that smug needs to be ..... swallowed or something....
like --- get real people.
sorry, confused I am getting.
Kali
(56,820 posts)Thanks OG - that is mostly how I feel too - when I first came here I just waded in too...I'm probably not the best at saying "hi and welcome" to new people, but I sure hope I haven't ever been outright rude to somebody just arriving (again unless they are obviously trolling or something).
I read lots of posts on the site, usually whatever catches my eye on the latest page, but the lounge is where I mostly post. To whoever said that loungers who don't post anywhere else should be "looked at" I take real offense. Talk about unwelcoming. I don't post that much in GD and elsewhere because I am usually in learning mode, rather than blabbing about stuff I don't know well. Does that mean I shouldn't be a member here?
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)I would think that should be what DU is seeking - folks who want to learn from folks who know. And there are some incredibly knowledgeable folks here too. I swear I learn things every day.

sure there are some inside jokes - that happens anywhere there are regulars, but all anybody has to do is ask and anybody will try to find links or explain.
as for being ignored, that happens to everybody at various times - plenty of regulars have sunken posts with no replies...if somebody only comes and posts a couple times and then gives up, it isn't because they were actively shunned - jeebus, it might have been a slow time or maybe what they posted didn't generate a response due to the type of content. Lots of reasons for no reactions here (hell, maybe what they posted was just stupid)
I would REALLY like to see even ONE example of a newcomer (who wasn't a troll) being openly challenged. Please.
MiddleFingerMom
(25,163 posts)being openly challenged. Please.
This!!! This!!! This!!!
pintobean
(18,101 posts)but it happened once in a while. I think it was people who weren't frequent lounge posters who were trying to fit in. It's happened to me a few times. I wont name names and I doubt I could find an example. I don't see those folks around much anymore, though.
For the most part, I've always found the lounge welcoming.

MiddleFingerMom
(25,163 posts)nadine_mn
(3,702 posts)But in no way do I consider myself in a clique...and I am even a host now!
I prefer to post in the lounge because GD is full of duplicate threads and anything not related to the day's current meme (Rush, Romney, Maher etc) sinks quickly. People are very quick to jump on comments, post snide or snarky remarks, etc. This is not always the case but seems like it recently.
I don't think the lounge has cliques...I think people here have become friends and many share a similar sense of twisted humor. With all boards that have been around for years there are inside jokes, references to past dramas. I belong to a craft group and their forums also have inside jokes that some see as cliquish.
Some people are very welcoming in the lounge...I am talking to you California Peggy... and some are more reserved. But that is the nature of any community..online or otherwise.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)when I first signed up and tried to spend some time in the lounge.
Not being a member of the club, I didn't get the jokes and was called a troll several times.
I even started a thread called "What does it take to be accepted in the lounge?". I started it in GD, it was moved to the lounge and I basically got the response I am getting now.
Then I had the perspective from a moderator perspective and got to see lots of evidence of exclusive and cliquish behavior.
Honestly, I am way past caring, particularly since some of the old drama kicks back up from time to time. I just find it ironic that members of the club don't think there is a club.
Tuesday Afternoon

and you think I am a member of a clique, right? If I am/was, I guess it means from the old stuff...well, all my "clique members" have been banned except for datasuspect
and he is never around anymore...so, is that the clique that you are referencing or, what...
some clique that was...and you should know since you have this moderator perspective.
I honestly want to understand this clique that I am in because the only one I know of now might be the dumbass clique....
cbayer
(146,218 posts)Again, I am not saying it's a bad thing to be a member of this club.
As to the old cliques and the clique wars, that's an entirely different thing. That was really, really ugly and I am very wary when evidence of that rears it's head.
Perhaps because clique was used in a very negative way during those wars (along with swarm and other terms), people here are sensitive to it. If that's the case, then the term has taken on a meaning that I can see would be offensive and will search for other terms (club? close group of friends that all hang out in the same place?).
As Xema Sab said below, when you have an area where threads are started that appear to be exclusively aimed at a small group ("in" jokes or those that directly address specific members), that feels cliquish to those that are not included.
Perhaps what will come of this is some effort to be more welcoming.
Wouldn't it be great if the lounge were the place where new members could introduce themselves and be welcomed. As I have access to info on where new members post (through MIRT), I can assure you that almost no one comes here first.
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)depending on their agenda I would suppose they have a target.
inside jokes?
the only one I know of is dumbass and that is no longer inside, right?
maybe some of us quick-witted and think fast on our feet with a good comeback, retort.
I don't know... if there is a club, it is called The Lounge and there are clubs all over DU with their own inside references, I would think.
I can not speak to other Loungers and their posting style.
I do know that I used to be more welcoming but, after the last several years and especially since my surgery last year, I participate less here but, I will talk to anyone, anywhere on DU.
Maybe that is not good or bad but, just the way I am.
thanks for your thoughts especially about XemaSab and her reply . . . because well.... you know why ... talk about Ugly. she knows cliques and if you don't know she knows them then you are not as up to speed on all the mess as you think you are...either that or I am really mistaken about what I saw happening in The Lounge a few years ago.

If others think we are just a room of goofs, then so be it.
I know that there are a lot of inside jokes here. I also know that many of the people here have been here a long, long time. Imo, if there weren't inside jokes among those people, it would indicate that the Lounge wasn't working. That people weren't having a good time, that they didn't care about each other. The inside joke thingy doesn't bother me at all.
Everybody has days where, in their real life they may be having a hard time. If there is a sad thread here, they may not be emotionally up to reading/posting in it themselves.
If the Lounge shut the doors, where would the fun go? The support for others? The crazy pictures and the album of the day? Other forums would lock those threads in a New York Minute.
If people ONLY post here, so fucking what?
Mmkay. End of rant.

(60,212 posts)The lounge sucks now in part because there is a small group of people who do not post for everyone to reply to, they post for their friends to reply to.
As a fundie book I was reading the other day said, "If it's not fun for all, it's not fun at all."
Most of these people do not use DU for anything other than interacting with their friends in the lounge. I almost never see the members of the clique in GD, LBN, or anywhere else on the site.
If I were Skinner and I saw a person who only posts in the lounge get into it with someone who is genuinely interested in politics and current events and someone had to be banned, the person who only posts in the lounge would be the first to go.
I know that the members of the clique are claiming not to know who the other members of the clique are, but I suggest to y'all that you go form a facebook group for your in-jokes, vanity posts, ego-fluffing, and other exclusive interactions, and come to DU only when you are interested in interacting with a wide variety of people on a wide variety of topics.

but, to say there is a clique... to me that means it is a group within a group and I don't see it happneing here. do you?
does any that make sense
siligut
(12,272 posts)Of course some people tend to respond to each other, more than others. It happens in all of the forums. But I really don't notice people being excluded and that would be the primary indication, for me, that a clique existed.

Kali
(56,820 posts)Seriously, XemaSab. I am just not seeing any of that anymore. Oh sure about once a month or so some of the FB gang shows up and tries to stir things up, but the truth is they are just as welcome to be here as anybody else even though they claim to hate the place...
But other than the fake callouts of MFM and his in return, which I think are probably funny to anybody with a warped sense of humor, and the big secret inside joke about that dumbass, I am just not seeing it. Can you give some more examples? Otherwise it is just the history of the place...Olive Garden, chicken and that sort of thing...What are the posts intended just for insiders/friends?
And do you think I should be banned if I "get into it" with a prolific GD poster just because I am not prolific? I try to avoid getting into it with anybody unless I know what I am talking about, and certainly not if I am actually in AGREEMENT with what I might be reading...the logic fails me on that, as well.

(21,020 posts)Like someone else above said, there are a few who exchange inside jokes.
Not saying it's abnormal or anything, just that I've seen it.
I haven't been challenged, but I have felt...well...left out. It's OK, though. I'll just have fun with whoever else wants to talk to me.
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)I almost died last year and the thread about it sunk after -4- replies...so you know...that would have been painful and humbling and it did sting. but, I blew it off and went on because that is my nature. I can not speak to other's natures and reactions about this board so, I won't.
I was in the hospital for 4 days with liver failure and had 2 surgeries. I was out of work for three weeks and ... the story gets worse but, fuck it. that is my life and I am pretty private.
I come to DU to read current events and post to de-stress.
read that everyone FOUR fucking replies. some gawdamn clique I am in. fuck this noise. it is bullshit.
if there is a clique I promise you I AM NOT IN IT!!!!
either that or it is biggest non-clique EVER been my experience to hang out with.
pipi_k
(21,020 posts)was it here, in the Lounge? I'm real sorry you didn't get more than a few replies...really and truly.
I never ventured into the DU2 Lounge, and I'll tell you why...
It was because, on other parts of DU2, the Lounge was viewed as being, well...rather low class, you know?
I was afraid to venture in on two levels...
1. Not being accepted here
2. Being branded, on other parts of DU2, as being one step up from a "moran".
One day a while back I decided to peek in here to see what was happening. Lo and behold...I see lots of music threads! I LOVE music. Music videos!
And I started posting, and I had fun.
I like it here in the Lounge, and the way I figure it, if anybody wants to think I'm a "moran" because I post in the Lounge, I don't give a shit.
Not my problem.
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)dumbasses ?!
fuck it. proud to be one, I am
fuck the smug.
that is their problem and we have a right to diss them over here just like they are dissing us over there, right?
turnabout fairplay.
you are right, their attitude is not my problem.

(43,850 posts)RT: Random Thoughts--a really really random dude whose performance art, mental issues or even reality no one could agree on. He's gone but his "I am due beer and travel money and many experiences" tagline remains.
LeftyFingerPop: a really really random TS'D dude whose very name can get your thread locked.
MiddleFingerMom: a really really random dude who has variously been accused of hijacking the Lounge and being the funnies mofo ever to walk the earth.
Etc. and so forth.

(43,850 posts)is that we all can't agree on whether water is wet. We just hang out and hug each other and make one another pissy and throw up our hands and act like sixth graders on Go Juice and reveal all our insecurities and paranoias and basically just do what people do.
Oh, and post pictures of cats.

I simply have the urge to be in this thread because I've not been part of a clique.

I want to use this now....

(4,653 posts)And i dare a jury to say my post goes against the TOS of tne lounge...it has been put here, so here it is where I'll answer. Many of my friends were purged. Before that, we liked to hang out together. We had our inside jokes, just us amd not against other DUers, no one in the lounge was the butt of our fun (except for perhaps Radio Lady).
Then there was the purge and forced ignores. Most of my forced ignores were TSd or PPRd.
So here I stand, representing LostinVa, Midlo, Kitchenwitch, and many others gone, but not forgotten.
On edit: How many heads here are going to explode when I admit I have MFM on total ignore. Just saying...there is no clique?

at least you admit to Radio Lady.

(8,556 posts)I've got no dog in this fight. I don't know anything about a clique. If it does exist, it doesn't impact my DU experience at all.
But one of the posters you're remembering was a nasty piece of work. Out of nowhere they leveled a disgusting personal accusation against me and refused to back down after it was conclusively rebutted (this occurred outside of the lounge). I was glad when they were finally tombstoned. I got the impression they had a long history of personal attacks and disruption. Some people deserve what they get.

(17,431 posts)I've been around long enough to see some drama play out, and always felt like the odd man out myself, but that's cool, because it's how I roll. I miss the folks that got bounced, they were fun, but if there is one flaw I've seen that will take someone down faster than anything, it's false pride. "I'm sorry" is a powerful tonic for hurt feelings.
And by the way, I noticed no one was checking receipts at the exit. To whom should I show mine?

(29,414 posts)that those in GD and elsewhere, looked upon The Lounge with disdain. Seems that the cliquishness is on the other side of the fence, by my reckoning...
In fact, one such thread in GD that was attempting to "understand" some fun thread in The Lounge was what got me interested. It appears doing fun things like having a "Questions Only" thread was beyond the capacity of the average GD-denizen to comprehend, and it sucked me in. I had a lot of fun that evening, and I've never become a denizen of GD, thankfully
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)thank you kentauros!!!!!!! this is EXACTLY what I am getting at!!!!!!!!!!!!!
kentauros
(29,414 posts)
The impression I've gotten for years from GD is that there's an overall "general attitude" that if you aren't a "regular" then you aren't worth noticing. Other than my (for me) massive "Texas and DU" thread there last year, I've never really been noticed over there. I am not a prolific poster really anywhere, even here, and I hate arguing for the sake of arguing, as is Standard Operating Procedure in GD and other such "big" forums.
If they say that they're a 'welcoming' bunch over there than here or elsewhere, then it must only be for those of a similar "overly-serious" mindset. Fun is not allowed!

(29,414 posts)1711, from Fr. clique, originally (14c.) "a sharp noise," from O.Fr. cliquer "click, clatter, crackle, clink," 13c., echoic. Apparently this word was at one time treated as the equivalent of claque (q.v.) and partook of that word's theatrical sense.
