He comes from the west coast sound. You can hear it in his music.

especially if you enjoy acid jazz.

Artists like The Herbaliser, Hexstatic, DJ Food, Funki Porcini, and Up, Bustle, and Out all fuse jazz, break beats, and hip hop quite nicely.

Some other rap artists that I enjoy of the non-gangster variety include:

Asian Dub Foundation
Mos Def
Common
Dead Prez
A Tribe Called Quest
Living Legends
PSC
LL Cool J
Planet Asia
Queen Latifah
Dr Doom/Octagon
A Tribe Unique
Talib Kweli
Eric B & Rakim
The Roots
Lifesavas
De La Soul
Afrika Bambaataa
Grandmaster Flash
Wu Tang
Public Enemy
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince

You can also find some excellent hip hop artists on the ANTI-/Epitaph label like Solillaquists of Sound, Sage Francis, and the Coup.

I also really enjoy latin hip hop, and I recommend Immortal Technique (His albums Revolutionary 1 & 2 are exceptional!), The Orishas, and Snow tha Product.

On edit - NSFW and trigger alert on this video. It is very powerful, brutal, and honest. Removing embed. Go look it up on Youtube.

I can always give you more.

I have DJ'ed, composed, and produced for several decades now. This is one of my favorite genres. I don't do the lyrics (never had any talent there) but I do instrumentals and beats.

Lots of great music of the beaten track for sure.

Really a basic suggestion, and you might already have it, since they were so big on the pop charts.
