A small shopping mall in Flemington I used to go to got a big black bear visit one day .-- I was SO glad I missed him.

That, of course, MAY be only Grizzlies, or those native to the US.

We occasional get a few in the NY capital region.
They are definitely in the Adirondacks and Catskills, as well.

Once you head out into the parts an hour's drive northwest of NYC, then you had better be prepared for the bear necessities of life....
Medford, in/among the Pine Barrens. They do have deer around, but NOT as 'country' as I am, in southern MD.

As for Great Blue Herons and Bald Eagles, they are all over the state.
