The Luft-wafer: Ice cream cone named after Adolf Hitler on sale in India sparks anger in Germany

Even for the most dedicated of ice cream lovers this sweet treat may prove a little hard to swallow.
Unbelievably a brand of ice cream cone is readily available in India which is named after Hitler.
Its difficult to fathom what the Nazi leader may have in common with the crunchy snack, but Hitlers name is splashed across boxes of the tasteless delicacy which is hawked across the country.
Not so sweet treat: A street-seller stands with his boxes of Hitler cones. Hitler's name and image are splashed across the boxes of ice cream cones, which are readily-available across India
Nothing wrong: A street-seller holds up a Hitler ice cream cone. A lack of Holocaust education on the sub-continent means that the brand is not offensive there

A lot of near-accidents are caused by dyslexics who drive through it when they see the signs at the city limits.

(5,354 posts)even if it's true. The horrors of Pol Pot were far removed from the West - yet we are aware of it, and wouldn't use his name or likeness to push products. Same goes for Idi Amin and others.
I don't get it.

(118,282 posts)India was still a colony in WWII, and a certain segment of the population there regarded the UK as more of an enemy than the Nazis. Perhaps 3 million died in the 1943 Bengal famine, which might be regarded as the result of incompetence or even callous indifference by the colonial administration: After attending one of the War Cabinet debates on sending famine relief, for instance, Field Marshal Wavell noted in his diary that Churchill wanted to feed only those actually fighting or making munitions or working some particular railways.. Finally, Indian independence resulted from the fact that the bankruptcy (associated with war spending) of the British empire at the end of WWII. In consequence, there may be segments of the Indian population who regard the WWII German role as somewhat ambiguous than it seems to us in the West
In my view, of course, none of these considerations justifies a light-hearted view of Hitler, or of the Third Reich atrocities
