Rickrolling is sexist, racist and often transphobic in context

http://boingboing.net/2015/05/28/rickrolling-is-sexist-racist.html

The rickroll is a kind of postmodern "shared joke" that can be used to dissipate online social anxiety—at least inasfar as everyone "gets" it. But among whom is that implicit context shared, really? The truth, according to this insightful longread at Medium, is that rickrolling is highly problematic, especially in its dependence upon the semiotics of cisgendered discourse.

.

At the time this video was made, the bartender, not a real bartender at the time, was renting a loft in Tribeca from the female lead, Astley rented a corner of that loft.

There was nothing sexual about it.

At least not until Barry Manilow released his cover of the same song.

And then this happened:

I don't understand...
Any how, I've been Rickrolling friends with my ukulele lately.
I've been doing that to friends of various stripes, colors, creeds, genders and so forth.

I don't see myself stopping.

The Rock to portray Jack Burton?
By Jason Weisberger at 8:38 pm Mon, Jun 1, 2015

Boing Boing BBS mainstay Miasm informs us the Rock is set to star as Jack Burton in a remake of one of my favorite movies of all time. I have immense respect for Dwayne Johnson, but I feel Big Trouble in Little China is sacred.

It'll take one heck of a performance for me to update the bot.

I had to google it.

Basically, I think it means that you are the gender you were born with, happy and secure in that. So, I was born female, and I am comfortable with myself as a woman.

I hope I have not offended anyone.

that you felt like you had to add a phrase like "So, I was born female, and I am comfortable with myself as a woman.

I hope I have not offended anyone." I know that you were half kidding....but... has society really come to the
point that we have to offer an apology if we are happy, healthy, and proud to be who we really are?
I sure hope not. Have a great day!

A related adjective is gender-normative; Eli R. Green has written that "'cisgendered' is used [instead of the more popular 'gender normative'] to refer to people who do not identify with a gender diverse experience, without enforcing existence of a normative gender expression".

Thank you.

Cisgendered refers to a person that was born female and views themselves as 100% female - or a person who was born male and views themselves as 100% male.

Cisgendered is better than a phrase like "gender-normative" because it doesn't push the idea that other people are abnormal.
