What's the BEST reaction you ever got to telling someone "I love you?"

It was Christmas 2012 and I told my girlfriend "I love you" for the first time and she said "OH SHIT."

Months later she told me "I reacted that way because I had similar feelings but wasn;t ready to deal with them."

What's your story?

and not in a good way (I've already told that sob story in the past, no need to re-hash).

She's 18 now and we're finally having good conversations, with a few laughs and some real dialogue again after a few years of rage and crazy times.

Yesterday as she was leaving for the music festival Wakarusa (10 hours away so a real road trip), I impulsively hollered from the kitchen that I loved her as I was loading the dishes into the dishwasher.

Two seconds later she was there giving me a hug and said, "Mumsy, I love you more". We stood there for a moment in the kind of embrace every Mumsy hopes their kids will someday grow up to do.

I held back the tears until she bounded out the door.

Yeah, she's finally back from being "away" metaphorically for the past few years.

Thanks for asking. You must have been psychically knowing that story was burbling around in my head today...

I don't have kids of my own, but my boyfriend has two, and I have two nieces that I just adore. They can be horrid at times, in those teen years, and I find myself wondering if they will come "back". One has, right around 19. Just waiting on the other 3. Your story gave me hope.

Glad you had a such a sweet moment with her!

...it made my OP worth it. I've had a couple of those "back from estrangement" hugs and yes, time does stand still.

He's not very communicative, but certainly improving all the time. Actually very high functioning, and has the mind of a computer hacker.
