Mick Taylor, lead guitar.
Oh God said to Abraham, Kill me a son
Abe says, Man, you must be puttin me on
God say, No. Abe say, What?
God say, You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin you better run
Well Abe says, Where do you want this killin done?
God says, Out on Highway 61
Well Georgia Sam he had a bloody nose
Welfare Department they wouldnt give him no clothes
He asked poor Howard where can I go
Howard said theres only one place I know
Sam said tell me quick man I got to run
Ol Howard just pointed with his gun
And said that way down on Highway 61
Well Mack the Finger said to Louie the King
I got forty red, white and blue shoestrings
And a thousand telephones that dont ring
Do you know where I can get rid of these things
And Louie the King said let me think for a minute son
And he said yes I think it can be easily done
Just take everything down to Highway 61
Now the fifth daughter on the twelfth night
Told the first father that things werent right
My complexion she said is much too white
He said come here and step into the light, he says hmm youre right
Let me tell the second mother this has been done
But the second mother was with the seventh son
And they were both out on Highway 61
Now the rovin gambler he was very bored
He was tryin to create a next world war
He found a promoter who nearly fell off the floor
He said I never engaged in this kind of thing before
But yes I think it can be very easily done
Well just put some bleachers out in the sun
And have it on Highway 61

(18,837 posts)I love the whole song because it is so BOB. Johnny Winter got a lot of credit for a couple of masterful versions, both studio and live, but it's one of those songs that really benefits from Dylan's own unique performing style. The "Real Live" album may not be the "best" in his catalog, but he was rocking, and coming off the heels of "Infidels," which was easily one of his best studio albums.

(22,887 posts)but I wasn't exposed to Shakespeare at all in high school. I remember we read Camus' The Stranger and Fahrenheit 451 but no Shakespeare. What a crime!!
I haven't heard Johnny Winter's versions-- I'll have to keep an eye/ear out for them.
Among many other things, Dylan is a fantastic wordsmith-- he loves to play with words.
A particular favourite is:
In the dime stores and bus stations
People talk of situations
Read books, repeat quotations
Draw conclusions on the wall

(18,837 posts)...is why Eric Clapton's version of that song was sliced from "Bobfest." the 35th anniversary concert. It's in the video but not on the CD. They kept "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," but "Love Minus Zero" has TWO killer Clapton solos...TWO! And his vocal is just so filled with nuance, every word shines, including the passage you shared.
The clip seems to have vanished from YouTube. The one below begins with the song in progress, unfortunately, but you'll see what I'm talking about:

(22,887 posts)The clip sounds great (thanks for that)-- too bad it was truncated on Love Minus Zero-- wonder why
I swear, I hear Knopfler in there somewhere (tho' I know he's not there)
