I did something really dumb

I'm home alone (hubby is on business trip).

I was going to bed and took a muscle relaxer because my back has been hurting, making it hard to sleep.

As I was laying in bed, drifting off to sleep I started thinking about my neighbor's murder.

Now, I'm woozy from the drugs, can't sleep, and all paranoid.

I realize it might be a bit difficult for you to move a muscle right now, LOL, but what it really means is doing something different to take your mind off whatever's bothering you. Read DU, watch TV, play a game, watch a funny video on YouTube (Rachel Maddow is showing baby moose cavorting in sprinklers right now ), do whatever you can to distract yourself until you feel able to sleep.

And that's one of the nice things about DU. We're always here 24/7, somebody's always up to reply to you, day or night!

3. Weren't they cute?! Almost makes me wish we had moose around here, LOL.

Actually, we did have a moose around here a couple of years ago, stopped traffic and made the front page of the local paper, it was such a rare occurrence. And my friend was part of that traffic stop, said the moose walked right by his car, was a really big one! Turns out it was a female, must have gotten lost somehow to end up wandering on the roadway, but she was tranquilized and relocated, so all turned out well.

Just try and focus on something pleasant, The Lounge is always a good idea. I remember one New Year's Eve when DU - and three dogs - were my only company. And I was reminded by a thoughtful DUer to count my blessings - which were those three dogs. I've never forgotten that...

Glad to hear your own moose tale (pun!) turned out well.

You are so kind!!

And you are also so correct. DU is a good place.
I've sometimes taken long breaks (years long, sometimes) but I always come back.

And, my big guy snoring behind the couch (my GSD & Akita mix) is also a big comfort.
He'd raise a ruckus if anyone did try to come in.

My fear is all in my limbic system.

5. I did appreciate Rachel's moose(s)! LOL!

She's probably my favorite and I enjoy her segments, serious or lighthearted, like that one. One thing I especially appreciate about her is her sense of humor, not always easy in her business, but she's never lost it, and I've been a fan since her Air America days...

And dogs are always a comfort, too, don't know what I'd do without mine. Yours sounds more formidable since I have a Brussels Griffon, LOL, but he's good company and can certainly bark up a storm, if nothing else...

I've been on DU since shortly before the Iraq invasion, have never taken a break for longer than a day or two except when I had computer issues and I missed it so much! It's become a part of my life after this long and I've learned so much here. Whenever there's news, I head straight to DU to find out what's really going on!

And I remember one of my early days/nights on DU when I stayed up all night following the story of a DUer who was attempting to rescue an injured skunk from under his house, was being guided through the process by someone who knew what about such things, and I knew I couldn't sleep till I learned how it turned out!

Score one for insomnia!

My guy is just a big goofball, but he does at least look scary. And he does certainly sound the alarm quite well if he thinks anything is wrong. As he's never acted aggressively directly with a person, I don't actually know what would happen if someone actually made it into the house.

People we invite in only get "attacked" by his slobber and hair.

I joined in 2002. At that point in my life I was dealing with my mother's terminal illness. Looking back on it now, I can see that I was filled with a lot of anger over that (not at my mother, but at the situation with the illness). I channeled a lot of that anger here, in very toxic way at times.

I thought I was angry about politics, and, that was certainly true to an extent, but there was a lot more going on than just that.

I cringe now looking back on how I acted on these boards those days.

But, I've done a lot of growing up since then and I hope I've become a better DUer for it....

7. I'm not always time in time for Rachel, but I try to catch the repeat

She's long been my favorite, ever since her radio days. I remember watching the first time she substituted for Keith Olbermann, had said on her radio show how nervous she was, and I followed along with KOEB on DU.2, wishing her well. It's unbelievable now, but she was initially nervous, then she found her comfort level by the end of that first appearance.

And your dog sounds like a sweetheart. My dog is small, but he can get pretty noisy if he puts his mind to it. I've previously adopted senior dogs from rescue, but this little guy found me at five months. Sadly, all three of the dogs who kept me company on New Year's Eve 2006 are now gone, two of mine and a giant Airedale who belonged to my SO, especially sad for my little guy since they were BFFs from day one. Charlie was also a big sweetheart and he was wonderful with the puppy. I think he must have been lonely before my little Jack came along. Here they are together, my favorite pic:

Our big guy really needs a playmate.

We do have another dog, our beloved Sarah who has been with us for over 15 years now.
But, when he came along she was already quite old and not in the mood for a rowdy guy that was twice her size.
After making it quite clear to him that she was NOT INTERESTED IN PLAYING AT ALL!!!!! he finally gave up and kept his distance, although he still sometimes tries to cuddle with her while she's asleep.

But, she is on her way to leaving us. She can't walk anymore and has become completely incontinent, bowel-wise.
So, the appointment is scheduled for Saturday.
I can't even bear thinking about it.
Sorry to be Captain Bring-down, but you know, you've been there.

When I've had a little time to heal, we'll get yet another rescue dog, this time, one suitable as a playmate.

I'll have to try and catch Rachel more often.

13. What drug was that?

I have taken a muscle relaxer on rare occasions, but there was only one that really worked. All the others had only the mildest of effects.

The one that worked was amazing. I had agonizing back pain last fall, and for the first time searched out a chiropractor. Even he could do limited help. Then I met up one Thursday evening in London with a colleague from Brazil. My back pain was particularly bad that day, and he noted I wasn't 100%. I told him what was wrong, and he gave me a pill which he said was a muscle relaxer he brought from Brazil. I thought about what might be in it and worried about side effects, but thought what the hell, I'll try it this once. I took it before I went to bed.

I went right to sleep, woke up the next morning and noted that all my pain was completely gone (!!!!), I mean NOTHING left. I couldn't believe it. No side effects at all. I asked him if there were some kind of narcotics or exotic Amazonian herbs in the pill. He said he didn't know of any.

I saw the chiropractor next Monday, and I told him what happened. He said, "yeah, sure, let's see how your back is." He felt around and noted to his complete amazement that my tension was completely gone, and this was four days later. He was freaking out, said he had never seen anything like it, would never have believed it if he hadn't seen the evidence first hand.

This was not a unique reaction, either, as I gave some of these pills to friends in France and Germany with back pain, and they told me they had similar reactions. If I could get the EU equivalent of the FDA to approve it, I could become a gazillionaire importing these pills into the EU from Brazil. As far as I know, they're over-the-counter down there.

14. Wow! That sounds amazing!!

My drug is called Tizanidine.
I guess it's supposed to be relatively mild as muscle-relaxers go.

I don't use it very often because I get a side effect of a dry, hacking cough that will wake me up. It doesn't happen every time I take it, but enough that I only use it when I really have to do so.

It's amazing how many countries have so much to offer that (I believe) are sidelined by entrenched powers-that-be in our own countries.

15. The Brazilian pill is called Tandrilax

I think it is listed on the internet somewhere, with all known side effects. I am always skeptical about pills from other countries, but this was the real magic bullet, and the three or four other people I gave one to said the same thing.
