And I detest them. I wore contacts for about 25 years until MENOPAUSE and my really rotten vision got way worse and I tried using reading glasses which never worked right, etc, etc, blah blah blah. I tried going back to hard contact lenses and they keep popping off one of my eyes, so contact lenses are just out of the question now.... So, it's back to glasses full time.
What's worse is the cost. Since I need correction for far and for reading, I have the bifocal things; no lines though, tres chic. However, the cost..... a decent, lightweight, nuetral, pleasant and modern frame runs a minimum of 200 euros. Each lens costs over 350 euros. Did you do the math? That's nearly 900 euros for a pair of glasses. Luckily, they come with a "spare pair' so I got some gorgeous Vera Wang frames done into super dark prescription glasses. I only get about 300 picked up by my insurance, but it's still a huge ouch to pay out. Even with the 2 pair, it's still over 300 a pair, out of pocket.
So since I'm forced to wear them, I can appreciate anyone who can match them up to outfits & have multiple choices for daily wear. And I'm definitely going to make sure they are up to date, hip, slick and cool, for sure. I love the people that have the guts to wear super cool artsy ones. But I HATE the german type squinty elongated ones with a real passion. They don't look good on anyone!
The major benefit of good quality glasses and sunglasses is that they drastically reduce wrinkles around the eyes, don't forget that.
Don't begrudge us our glasses!!!!! As we get old our eyes go all to hell. It's genetic. It sucks, be nice!

(20,188 posts)Even no-line progressives can be had for less than $200, sometimes even under $100. I've bought glasses from the following:
Zennioptical.com
39dollarglasses.com
EyeBuyDirect.com

(1,232 posts)contacts and glasses. I'm what my eye doctor calls delicately, bless his heart, 'sensitive'.... It takes no less than 3 fittings to get them just right and I try on hundreds before I find exactly what I like and what's comfortable. I found a new line of frames that are super comfortable and lightweight by Uniqeyes.
What some people call 'sensitive' others call a pain in the ass, lol, but I know what I like and if I have to spend 24 hours a day with this crap on my face, I've got to really be comfortable and stylish! Plus I have to see perfectly... I can't stand struggling to see to read or for driving, plus I'm clumsy as heck with a wonky ankle and knees, and if the depth perception is off by an atom, I wipe out.
Soooo it's all old school for me!!!!! The surgeries are tempting, but still out of reach financially... plus I'm not 100% confident that the technology is perfect. And I hate doctors and hospitals anyway.... I got a million excuses.

(20,188 posts)She will need her Pupillary Distance (PD) which is the distance between her pupils in millimeters. For an adult, it's usually between 55 and 65. She should be able to get it from her eye doctor. It isn't always written on the prescription. If the doctor won't give it to her, there are ways of measuring it yourself. There are instructions on the web. I suggest doing it a couple of different ways. Being off by a millimeter or 2 is no big deal.
To choose a pair that will look good, take a pair you already have that you like and that fit well. Measure the width and height of the lenses and the overall width. Pick out a pair with similar measurements. A general rule is that round faces look best with square or rectangular frames and angular faces look best width round or oval shapes. Oval faces can wear just about everything.

(20,188 posts)When I got my first pair almost 50 years ago, they had 3 frames for girls - THREE. Now they have every color and shape you could want and buying them online is so cheap you can give Elton John a run for his money.
