Some Minor Crotchets about Beer

Oneth, this is NOT about how beer was better in the 'Good Old Days', it wasn't. It's better now. But I have a few minor complaints.

A: Every IPA does not have to be a hop bomb. It seems brewers are trying to make the hoppiest beers possible. Somebody brews a 100 IBU beer, and somebody else HAS to top that. The original IPAs were hoppy, but not the bombs we see now.

B: There are other brewing traditions beside the Belgian. Again, it seems almost every brewer is making sours, abbeys, dubbels, tripels, quadrupels, fruit beers, saisons and so on. Actually a reaction seems to have begun against this. One local brewery is brewing Scottish ales, another specializes in German beers and so on.

C: Stop just showing off. You make bad beers. One brewer, New Belgium I think it was, had a cooperative beer where it seemed one brewer wanted to make a saison, one wanted to make a fruit beer and one wanted to make a sour. They ended up making a mess.

D: Respect the style. Pilsener does not have rice in it. You don't barrel age Helles. Dark rye fruit kolsch (the brewer stopped making it) was an abomination.

And it's pretty much the only Lagunitas product I see that makes it to the kegs for wide distribution to the the pubs and restaurants. Lagunitas got into trouble bottling a ton of heavenly hopped gimmick beers the neophytes fell for and learned to hate.

I love my barley sandwiches, and even thought my go-to drink, and benchmark for all things Pale Ale is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Lagunitas IPA is defiantly in my rotation.

and there's hoppy that well-balanced. I tend to prefer hoppier beers, but I agree some are just nasty hop bombs.

I really like Two Roads. It's based out of Stratford, CT. Not sure if they sell it out of state or not.

For instance I'm a CAMRA member, and as such I can get hung up on method of dispense. Some beer styles like mild and bitter only seem to work on cask. On the other hand, even I can accept that sour lambic style beers are better suited to keg.

Other beery gripes of mine include use of crystal malt with new world hops, beers made with chilli, beers made with peat smoked malt and beers made with cinnamon.

If you want IPA's that aren't massive hop bombs try looking for IPAs made with British hops. British hops are not looked on as well as the newer varieties but they make for IPA's closer to the original ones.

Although it must be noted that Old Peculiar is very unfashionable at the moment, with big new world hopped IPA's and weird and wacky stuff from the likes of Siren Craft and Wild Beer Co being the in thing right now.

...if you were to ask people for a list of classic UK beers, you'd probably get more modern stuff then long established traditional bitters and dark ales.

You would probably get a few mentions for the likes of Hopback Summer Lightning, Harveys Sussex Best Bitter and the aforementioned Old Peculiar, but more people citing beers such as Thornbridge Jaipur and Oakham Citra, plus quite a few beers from Brewdog and Kernel as being classics.
