2. I saw one about the size of the larger rats in Richmond CA

I kept seeing this animal running in and out from under the house two doors down. I thought it was a small dog. Nope, rat. I moved soon after that. Damned thing was bigger than my cats.

The two limiting non-genetic factors for the size of rodents are food-supply and climate. The warmer it is year-round, all other factors being equal, the larger the rats.

Presumably, Miami would have the largest rats in the US.
