The gardeners come every week and sometimes have four or five going at once.
Drives me crazy.
I guess noise pollution is irrelevant when it comes to these noisy devils. All I
can do is...
and tune out

I didn't realize they're so bad for the environment (I never researched this) but apparently the NOISE is one of the more benign things about them!!
BAN LEAF-BLOWERS!!!
Populist_Prole
(5,364 posts)Hell, they're hardly even used to blow leaves around. Anymore, most are used to blow dust/dirt from one area to another; or to spread it around and atomize it so it gets all over everything and everybody.
And the noise, noise noise noise noise!

(51,308 posts)stopped by a peaceful park that I like to drink some water.
I had to move on because the adjacent neighborhood had numerous workers with blowers. It sets my teeth on edge.
Earlier that day, my mom and I went for a walk in a different park. Same thing, except with weed-whackers, mowers and so on. My mom is hard of hearing (almost 90) and the noise made her crazy.
I remember summers of my childhood, when all you would hear was crickets, cicadas, children playing, and the occasional low drone of a push mower.

(67,111 posts)My yard is pretty small, and my neighbor's yard is about one-third smaller. I can mow and rake my yard in about half an hour. It takes him 45 minutes to mow and another 45 minutes with the leaf blower to clean up the trimmings.
In the winter he actually paces up and down his sidewalk blowing snow from the pavement as it falls in real time.
Leaf blower afficianados are a special breed.

I actually asked a gardener once if he knew what a rake was. He just looked at me.

Oh yes... I seem to recall what those are...er, were.
One fine fellow, with leaf-blower in hand (and it was ON though maybe in neutral), walked through
the lobby of our office building with the thing spewing exhaust fumes and who-knows-what-else. He
was oblivious.
I was apoplectic. Another Darwin Award Winner (that list is getting mighty long).
NV Whino
(20,886 posts)That's the worst I've heard yet.
We do have some regulations regarding time in the towns, but in the boondocks, anything goes. The guy that my landlady hires blows our gravel driveway. He headed toward my car once and nearly lost his life. He doesn't come anywhere near my side of the house these days.
ailsagirl
(24,287 posts)What did you do to discourage him?
I had a next door neighbor who was a wackjob-- destructive and devious. He would finish using the
blower on his property, then casually saunter over to ours (very close proximity) and pretend to clean
up our driveway ("like a good neighbor"
. Problem was, he'd do it after I had washed my car and we
watched him using the blower on the area around my car, but every so often he'd aim the thing right
at my car, blowing dirt and debris on it. A real bastard. That's just one of the things he did. As I said,
a real wackjob and probably unbalanced (or is that the same thing?).
I've read stories of neighbors-from-hell and they scared the dickens out of me, so I tried to defuse the
situation by not responding to his mischief. But it was a scary time, I tell you.
I've since moved away (not because of him) and things are OK in my current neighborhood (knock wood)

(20,886 posts)I think he's afraid of me. Which is fine with me.

NJCher
(43,165 posts)do not defile the word "gardener." Gardeners are gentle folk who work with the earth to grow beautiful vegetation.
Leaf blowers, on the other hand, are in the category of people who think nature should be controlled. No leaves on the ground. It's called the industrial approach to landscaping.
Real gardeners (I am one) don't use leaf blowers.

Cher
NV Whino
(20,886 posts)You are absolutely correct.
Want a job?
NJCher
(43,165 posts)but I couldn't because the way it's structured, it's all minimum wage. My idea was to have an organic gardener bank, but nobody wants to pay.
Instead of using fossil fuels to haul heavy equipment around, like blowers and mowers, the gardener would travel to the person's house and use their equipment. Organic techniques would be used, and as far as equipment, rakes, not blowers.
What I did regarding leaf blowers, though, was get a partial ban on them in my town. They can only be used six weeks in the spring and six weeks in the fall. To get the ban, though, took a grassroots group of 2000 people, which I and my partner formed. Lotta' work. Four years worth, in fact.

ailsagirl
(24,287 posts)That you were instrumental in getting a partial ban is very impressive! I imagine the opposition was strong.
Wow-- four years?? It's a great start to a perhaps-maybe-someday total ban.
Good bumper sticker: RAKES, NOT BLOWERS!!

(36,286 posts)too many retirees with not enough to do! And I say that as a retiree myself. The leaf blowers are in the hands of the landscapers some hire. I was shocked that anyone would waste the time and energy to blow lawn clippings off the lawn. These lawns get mowed so often you can't even see the clippings!

Fall - Daily leave blowing
Winter - For snow moving dontchaknow
Spring - Oak trees drop leaves all year

(24,287 posts)We should too. I nearly ran one down this morning.
The gardeners I spoke about come EVERY WEEK, even when there are no leaves around and when
the grass isn't growing (in winter). I hate to think I'M paying for this. I should ask the Board of
Directors if these weekly visits are really necessary. How about every OTHER week in the winter?
Sounds reasonable to me. (I guess that's why the board won't entertain the idea)
And our HOA fees keep going up, up, up
Grrrrr....

But, I have a couple of water oaks in my yard. Their leaves tend not to rake up very easily. They get stuck down in the grass. The only way to get them out is to blow them out. I don't have a leaf blower, but I do have a shop-vac that reverses into a blower, so I use that. It's the only time I'd rather have a leaf blower.
ailsagirl
(24,287 posts)(at first I didn't know what you meant because you wrote "glass" instead of "grass"
I never heard of a water oak-- in California we have "live oaks" but to me they always look half-dead!
GoCubsGo
(34,914 posts)I also have Southern red oaks in my yard. Their leaves are a lot easier to rake up. They are pretty big.
ailsagirl
(24,287 posts)Southern red oaks sound pretty. Do their leaves turn scarlet in the fall?

(34,914 posts)At least, that's what it seems like. I suspect we'll have that this year. It's been really hot and dry where I live.

(5,604 posts)I use them, as well as leaf vacuums everyday picking up cigarette butts and all manor of debris. Its a part of my job as a maintenance man at both office towers and commercial plazas. The very fact that they help me keep the sites looking pristine keeps me employed.
I wish I didn't need them..... but people are pigs.
And I will be the first to agree that I too hate hearing anything like them on my days off when I'm sleeping in trying to recover from the back breaking exhaustion of working out doors with these and other machines.
