New York men make $1,000 a week by waiting in lines

NEW YORK, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A New York entrepreneur said he makes up to $1,000 a week by offering a simple service -- waiting in long lines.
Robert Samuel, founder of business Same Ole Line Dudes, said he makes up to $1,000 a week by holding places in lines for product releases, sample sales, Broadway shows, Saturday Night Live tickets and other events.
Samuel said he and his team of professional "waiters" charge $25 for the first hour per line-sitter and they each charge $10 for each additional half hour. He told Salon he recently made $1,000 by waiting 48 hours outside the Apple store in the Meatpacking District for a customer seeking an iPhone 6s.
"I've sat outside in rain, sleet, snow, hot weather, very freezing cold weather..." Same Ole Line Dudes employee Adonis Porch said.
Samuel, who described his business as "like Uber for line waiting," said he has a formula for choosing a line when there are multiple options.

(18,629 posts)And a fascinating sidelight into how money circulates in this country. A minimum-wage job at heavy labor makes 7.50/hour in some places -- they charge 25.00/hour for sitting doing nothing, and get it. There's a moral there, somewhere.

(14,881 posts)It's hard to sit for extended periods, especially in cold weather when your core temp starts to drop. Uncomfortable for your butt and back after a while. Pee breaks?
Still...it's decent money and some reading time, knitting time, whatever...

(56,848 posts)who said he got in trouble for scalping low numbers for the line at the local deli?
This reminds me of that, but somebody paying $1,000 to buy a $500 iPhone seems kind of crazy to me. Of course, somebody in China sold their kidney for an iPad, so I guess all bets are off to get the newest technology.

(20,176 posts)Clearly the kind of person that would hire a line-waiter has money to burn. Fools and money are soon parted.
I don't begrudge this guy's business idea...he's downward-distributing capital from the have too much to himself for...well, it appears he's sitting in a lawn-chair and playing on his phone, he's got snacks, water and a sweatshirt if he gets cold. Nobody's ever paid me $1000 to relax. Fucking yeah, you go, guy!
Only one of these people is a genius entrepreneur and it isn't the person paying him $1000 to wait in line to buy a phone.

(53,394 posts)I would find it incredibly hard to do what this man does - sitting in one place is not something I can do for long periods of time.
War story follows: The Army has counterintelligence agents. The Army has a list of required skills for each of its jobs, and for the CI Agent one of the skills is "must be able to sit in a chair for 8 hours." They test you for that at the start of the course, and a lot of people fail.
