Getting a tattoo can be a pretty grisly experience, but theres also beauty in the delicate, often meditative encounter between a tattoo artist and customer. Anne Burlock Lawver highlights both the agony and the serenity of tattooing in her series, Indelible, which comprises more than a years worth of photographs from a single Washington Heights tattoo parlor, Gunmental Tattoos, which has since closed.

(102,360 posts)I respect personal choice and would never be unkind to someone sporting one or more-- but I've yet to ever see one I thought to be remotely attractive... and as we age, even less so.

I see no value in tattoos. Like you, I've never seen one which made me think "Yeah, you look better with that". Quite the converse, actually.

(2,560 posts)Yeah, if that turns you on.
Different strokes, and all that.
Having said that, when I see a tattoo on other than a sailor, especially the ones on the legs of overweight women at Walmart, I just think "Why?"
Do you think this makes you look more attractive?
It ain't workin', babe.
How much did that cost you?
Were you drunk?
Was it a dare?
Tramp stamp.
OK, flame away.

(4,119 posts)Tattoo removal!
Tattoo's are a fad and like all fads they will seem ridiculous before long. Remember the mullet, shoulder pads, bell bottom pants...etc. Can't toss a tattoo into the Goodwill bin.
Ditto on the earrings that require a hole the size of a quarter!

(3,489 posts)I have one on the side of my biceps on both arms. There is a lot of 'meat' there, so getting the tattoo was not painful. It's not a real pleasant experience but not nearly as bad as getting your teeth drilled. Also, after a while, your body fills with endorphins (sp) and you get this nice little high going. Each tattoo took about 2 hours to put on and I did feel a little sick afterwards....kinda nauchaeaus (sp) but that went away pretty quickly. If you get a tattoo on your elbow I would bet that would hurt quite a bit since there is not much meat there. Just my 2 cents.

(22,270 posts)She is very busy putting tattoos on lots of people so there must be a lot of addicts in Phoenix.
Hers are all custom art that she designs to customer's specifications.
I do not have one.
She is planning on getting certified to do all the cosmetic tattooing: eye liner, eyebrows, nipple color after breast reconstruction, enzymatic removal of old ink and scar reduction. I told her she was determined to get me in that chair, since my eyebrows have become quite sparse I might actually get that done .
I think, like normal pierced ears it is going to stay around much longer than many fads. I do not care for the huge earring holes and facial piercings and so on. I do however take notice of a really nice piece of body art.

(70,215 posts)have had 4 tats, inc one covered up the first. too tiny.
but they are all on my arms, and not anywhere sensitive like wrists or elbows.

(12,158 posts)it bled a lot. The needle kept slipping in the blood and my tattoo ended up looking stupid. Glad my hair is long enough to cover it.
It burned like crazy while it was being done and didn't stop for a couple of days, until it began to heal.

(7,505 posts)when Radar was thinking about getting one because all the marines had them, they were tough and got the girls. He received some advice; like get a calendar tattoo, then it would be useful for twelve months. Or why would someone put a picture on their body that they wouldn't hang on their wall. He ended up getting a temporary one on his butt of a teddy bear.

(21,904 posts)I like watching the procedure. I like to see how the artists interpret the challenge. I like the art of it. I don't have one myself, but I do like looking at them.
Apparently the ribs and the head hurt like hell. The contestants all dread when someone wants a tattoo on their ribs.

That was done 27ish yrs ago, and though i wouldn't do it ~now~, it's a treasured memory of a more adventurous era in my life.

(11,924 posts)He did tattoos for the wedding party and guests all day and into the evening. Nobody in my immediate family got one.
My SIL is really into the pain/adrenaline factor -- so much that she's had over 100 done (some large, some quite small). She's also into other forms of pain, so I'm really not surprised.
Whatever floats her boat....

(20,214 posts)My eyebrows have gotten thinner as I've gotten older, but drawing them on is such a hassle. So I got the "permanent makeup" done on my brows. One was a little ouchy, but the other one wasn't too bad. Now I want to get eye liner done.

(5,604 posts)on an online dating site, and we hit it off. I have no tattoos; (not because I have anything against them, I just don't feel that strongly that I want my body marked forever with some statement or art), and after our second date we ended up having sex. I was 39 and she was 36, and we were both shocked that neither of us had any body art. Its rare nowadays to be unadorned in some way.
