I've been a PI now since I left the feds back in 2004. Like me, he wasn't a fan of police interaction but solved problems for his clients.

If you asked about favorite do-gooder, I'd say Rockford or McCall (The Equalizer).

Be careful what you let your kids watch on tv, else they'll be like me and chase a crazy dream and get a fun job.
