You probably already know....but they didn't believe Gene Hackman could do comedy, so he had to audition to get this part!
Sheer genius.
I heard Hackman just showed up during casting call and asked to do a read. This right after scoring an Oscar for The French Connection. But yeah, I can understand "Gene Hackman, comedy? Gimme a break." Good comedy: Good acting chops plus perfect timing.
