Hello all,
I know there are some doctors/nurses/health professionals here so I could use your help.
My sugars, cholesterol, and blood pressure aren't high but I could use to get them down. I could also stand to lose some weight. I've tested positive for celiac so grains are out for me. I also have an absorption issue (low stomach acids and pancreatic acids don't help much either).
That said, my new GI told me to go Paleo -- veggies, grass fed beef and organic meats, and of course exercise.
Anyone have any success on it?
Thanks
Paula

(3,995 posts)She had an autoimmune disorder and a food allergy. Doing research, she found that a paleo diet might benefit her, so she tried it. She's feeling much better, her slightly elevated sugar levels returned to normal and she easily dropped weight. Good luck!

(22,457 posts)Started last Febuary! Lost a lot of weight. Stopped my HBP meds and cholestrol meds cut in half. GP might stop all meds in 6 months.
At my high school weight now.
If you need more info let me know.

Such a simple, easy diet. Once you get used to it, you won't even think of dining any other way.

(35,753 posts)I only went Paleo on a lark. Then I found the weight coming off and it was so easy.
Pretty soon one realizes there's something fundamentally wrong with all the grain in the American diet.
Grains made me want to eat. I had all kinds of cravings, and that always sabotaged any diets I would try. From reading, I found out this was probably due to the way they modified wheat. After dining Paleo for about a month, that all stopped.
Now I never have cravings and in fact, am rarely hungry.

(3,818 posts)Whole 30, pretty much the same as Paleo, but slightly more restrictive because for various reasons they don't want you to make recipes like Paleo Pizza or pancakes (mainly psychological - they want to help you overcome food addictions). Anyway, towards the end of that month, I was feeling great, more energy, and a great sense of mental well-being that I hadn't felt in a long time.
Here are some recipes:

From this group, the shrimp and chicken recipe were really good. If you don't want to buy Coconut Aminos, you could substitute Worcestershire Sauce. There is only one ingredient that is non-Paleo/Whole 30 compliant in Worcestershire Sauce (sugar, but there is only 1 gram).
Haven't tried any of these recipes but they look good too:

Coconut Larabars are a nice treat too.
I also do this, but most people find it too extreme!

I think it started one Passover, which pretty much requires a paleo diet. It continue because I am bad at cooking anything but breakfast, and keep kosher, so I've always eaten a lot of eggs, milk, and fish, vegetables, lots of nuts, and a little fruit. Some chicken and beef, but kosher meat is very expensive, so not that much.
Anyway, I am 91 and my BP is 110/70 and my cholesterol is very good and I can bench 215lbs for 8.
Never been a runner, but I do walk to the local HS stadium and walk up and down the stadium steps.

(36,478 posts)Hunter Pence, who won his second World Series in three years with the Giants, is one of the quirkiest and most charismatic All-Stars in baseball, playing with an unself-conscious blend of bug-eyed intensity and unrestrained desire. This year the public persona of the 31-year-old right fielder grew exponentially with his play on the field, his motivational speeches and the appearance -- in ballparks from coast to coast -- of an inexplicable phenomenon: Hunter Pence signs.
The Mag: Did the whole sign thing blow you away when it took off?
Pence: It was extremely funny. My girlfriend, Alexis [Cozombolidis], was the one who got it started. I'm a big "Seinfeld" fan, and it started with a picture we posted of me in a New York diner holding a cup of coffee -- it wasn't the actual "Seinfeld" diner, but it reminded me of it -- with the famous quote, "These pretzels are making me thirsty." That night in Queens, some fans made some signs: "Hunter Pence Puts Ketchup on His Hot Dog" and "Hunter Pence Eats Pizza With a Fork." Those are two things New Yorkers should never do, according to "Seinfeld." I thought it would last one or two days, maybe through the Mets series, and we couldn't believe what it turned into.
When did you realize it had taken on a life of its own?
The Mets series was cool, but I thought, "OK, that was just New York." But when we went to Milwaukee and all of the right-field bleachers in Milwaukee had a ton of signs, I couldn't believe it. OK, they caught on. The next stop was Kansas City and I thought, "There's no way Kansas City has signs," and they had even more. And some really funny ones.
Do you have any favorites?
I have a ton of favorites. "Hunter Pence Picks the Hamburger in the Hot Dog Race." If you're a "Seinfeld" fan -- and I don't know if this is appropriate -- a lady held one that said "Hunter Pence is Spongeworthy." Another one was "Hunter Pence Thinks Kansas City's in Kansas."
<more, but just baseball stuff>

(49,999 posts)And sublime. I just did a google search and there are some great ones out there!
I don't keep up with baseball but I might tune in just to see the signs.

(46,356 posts)And outside of testimonials, (which in science are worthless,) fad diets are at best worthless, at worst they can kill a person. Painfully.
And some of the claims of the paleo diet pushers are farfetched and deceptive.

(3,051 posts)People get extreme. But people eat too much crap, especially sugar, and not enough real food.
A sort of paleo diet -- back to eggs, fish, nuts, fruits & veggies and much less wheat/grain is ideal.
Our current food pyramid was brought to you because Iowa is the first primary state.

(16,334 posts)people act like this is some break through knowledge. What's happened is people have gotten into easier/less expensive/quicker and they don't often stop to think about what they are eating. Getting back to the basics as much as possible and adding exercise never goes out of style.
