A friend of mine who after retiring and moving to a rural area has suddenly turned very right wing. Was a center/left type. Hugely into 'The Simpsons' now. It's Simpsons this and Simpsons that. He won't shut the f*ck up about that damned show. My other friends notice this too.

Hoping it provides some gravitational pull to the left to keep him from being a full-on teabagger.

Ned Flanders is most likely a conservative, evangelical Christian but he doesn't necessarily always share the views of the right wing on certain issues. For example, when Springfield was proposing a new measure to deport illegal immigrants, he was seemingly one of the ones opposing it.

I'd characterize Homer Simpson largely as a swinging voter who is quite often inclined to follow the popular political tends unless he is made to see reason on it. For instance, he is all in favor of the measures to deport illegal immigrants until he realizes that someone he cares about (Apu) will be personally affected by it, then he reconsiders and opposes the measure. He is knee-jerk homophobic until a gay man saves him from serious injury and then he reconsiders his prejudices. OTOH, he does sometimes go against the political grain. He supported Mr. Burn's run for Governor as a Republican because he was his boss without thinking about the issues involved.

OTOH he does have some idiosyncracies. Having gotten into a conflict with GHWB that turned physical, he does not like the Bush family and has made disparaging remarks about both father and son (years later). I seem to recall (my memory my be faulty) that he supported Walter Mondale in 1984 but then supported Al Haig's Republican presidential bid in 1988 -two men with very different ideologies. He voted for President Obama in 2008

Marge Simpson -A liberal Democrat. Voted for Jimmy Carter, generally progressive on most issues, campaigned for the Democratic Governor even when her husband was campaigning for Mr Burns. She did manage Krusty the Clown's political campaign when he was running for congress as a Republican but that was because she wanted him to stop the planes from flying over her house

Lisa -Usuaully a reliable liberal Democrat but she did support Krusty the Clown's bid as a Republican Congressman, admitting she "hated to be on the losing side all the time" and because of the flightpath issue

Mr Burns -Republican

Mr Smithers -Either a Log Cabin Republican or a secret Democrat. He will give the impression of being a conservative Republican because he wants to please Mr Burns. But he did go behind Mr Burns's back to discreetly reveal the election of Sideshow Bob as Republican Mayor was due to electoral fraud so he's obviously not as souless and morally bankrupt as his boss

Dr Hibbert -Republican, attends Republican meetings

Krusty the Clown -see above

Bob Dole -Republican, as in real life

Mayor Quimby -Democrat, although hardly a role model for the party
